A livewire Glaswegian who etched himself into Oxford United history by scoring the U’s second goal in the 1986 Milk Cup final win over QPR at Wembley. Houghton joined United from Fulham and went on to become a highly influential midfielder until he was sold to Liverpool in October 1987 for a club record £825,000. Houghton won the first 12 of his Republic of Ireland caps while on Oxford’s books, often appearing alongside John Aldridge and Dave Langan.
