Originally signed by Arthur Turner at Birmingham, Houghton was a constant scorer for Southend before Turner persuaded him to join him again at Oxford, paying £2,000 for him in March 1961. In 1961/62 he scored 43 goals, a club record, and then scored in each of United first three games in the Football League.
