Des Buckingham Previews Exeter Away

The manager looks ahead to the crucial final regular season game of the season

It all comes down to this Saturday for Oxford United and the 2023/24 season.

In most scenarios, if we better the result of Lincoln City or Barnsley then United will reach the play-off semi-finals. Although Blackpool is still in the hunt in eighth place, then this circumstance is not guaranteed.

The main job on Saturday is to win away at Exeter and hope results fall elsewhere, and for the manager Des Buckingham that is the only thing he is focused on.

The 39-year-old does admit he will be keeping an eye on results elsewhere, but still, the only aim is getting his own team performing in the right way.

While the target is getting into the play-off semi-finals, the manager does feel it has been an overall positive season no matter what happens this weekend.

He said: “I’m expecting a tough game. They (Exeter) are a team like us that are up there in the form table and at home they will want to give their fans something going into the off-season.

“We are in a good run of form playing good football and we are doing as much as we can to put on a very good performance to put us in a place to leave Exeter with the result we want.

“In the last few games, we have had the fans tell the players what the result is, which has been heard back on the bench. We will have a member of staff feedback because it can determine, especially in the second-half, the approach we may take if we need to.

“It’s been a good season in comparison to where we were as a club 12 months ago. To be in a position of pushing for the play-offs in the last game of the season, I think it’s a wonderful thing in a 12-month period.

“We got off to a great start then we had a few changes, manager included. What I’ve been really pleased with in the last four or five weeks, we’ve been able to bring things together to show the type of football we want to do here which is really exciting. It’s now about building on that at Exeter and for next season.”
