How does recruitment work at Oxford United Academy?

Oxford United Academy has a network of scouts who identify and monitor players across the local area, nationally and, where appropriate, internationally.

Our scouts regularly attend fixtures from Under-7 through to Under-21 level, watching players within their current footballing environment. When a scout identifies a player who may have the potential to progress in our recruitment process, the player will be discussed and further assessed by the Academy Recruitment Department.

Recruitment is an ongoing process, and players may be monitored over time before any decision is made regarding an invitation to train or trial with the Academy.

Does Oxford United run open trials, and how can I get a trial?

Oxford United may hold age-specific Talent ID events, open trials or recruitment opportunities on an occasional basis. Where these opportunities are available, information will be communicated through the Club's official channels and relevant local areas.

Our primary method of recruitment, however, is through ongoing scouting and observation. Our scouts regularly watch players at their grassroots clubs, schools and representative fixtures before deciding whether a player should be considered for further assessment.

Where possible, please include a current fixture list, including dates, kick-off times and venues, as this allows our recruitment team to identify opportunities to watch the player in their normal footballing environment.

Please also include relevant footballing information such as:

• Player's full name
• Date of birth
• Current club
• Playing position
• Preferred foot
• Previous clubs
• Representative honours or achievements
• Any relevant footballing background

If available, supporting recommendations or references from coaches may also be included.

Please note that submitting a playing CV does not guarantee a trial or an invitation to train. All players are assessed against the requirements of their relevant age group and the current Academy player cohort.

How do I know if an Oxford United scout has been to watch me?

Our scouts will generally wear Oxford United clothing or Academy apparel when attending fixtures. However, there may be occasions where a scout is not wearing Club-branded clothing.

Our scouts aim to observe players in their normal footballing environment without placing unnecessary pressure on them. The focus is on seeing players play naturally and assessing their performance, behaviour and overall suitability.

If our Recruitment Department wishes to progress a player following an observation, we will normally make contact through the player's current club, coach or manager before any direct approach is made to the player's family.

What are Oxford United Academy looking for in a player?

We understand that players develop at different rates and that every player will have their own individual strengths, weaknesses and characteristics.

Our recruitment process considers the Player, Person and Athlete as a whole. We assess a range of technical, tactical, physical, psychological and social attributes, alongside factors such as relative age, physical maturation and individual development.

We will consider areas including:

• Technical ability
• Tactical understanding and decision-making
• Game understanding and awareness
• Physical attributes and potential
• Psychological characteristics
• Learning capacity and coachability
• Character and personality
• Competitive mentality
• Resilience and response to setbacks
• Social behaviour and relationships with teammates
• Potential for future development

We also have to consider how a potential recruit compares with the players already within our Academy. Recruitment is therefore not simply about identifying a player who is performing well; we are looking for players who demonstrate the potential to develop to the level required within Oxford United Academy.

Character is an important part of our recruitment process. Scouts may observe how a player conducts themselves before, during and after a fixture, as well as how they interact with teammates, coaches, officials and opponents.

I keep contacting clubs but never seem to get invited in. What can I do to get scouted?

Football is an extremely competitive environment, and there are a large number of talented young players who want the opportunity to progress into professional football.

It is important to remember that players develop at different rates. Some players are identified at a very young age, while others develop later and may not be ready for an Academy environment until a later stage.

The best thing any player can do is continue to enjoy football, work hard and focus on their own development.

Play as regularly as possible, listen to your coaches, challenge yourself and look for opportunities to play at the highest appropriate level. If an opportunity to move to a stronger team or environment becomes available and is right for your development, consider it carefully.

Most importantly, do not become discouraged if you are not invited to a trial. Not receiving an invitation does not necessarily mean that you cannot progress as a footballer. Development is rarely a straight line, and players can improve significantly over time.

Our scouts are continually watching games across the football pyramid, from Under-7 through to Under-21 level, and we encourage players to focus on enjoying their football and continuing to develop within their current environment.
