Wayne started his playing career with Bristol City, but it was at Chester City that he came to prominence, making 289 appearances over ten years, during which he was also capped seven times for the England C team. He left for Hereford, initially on loan, making vital saves as they won promotion from the Conference to the Football League and into League One, being named Player of the Year in 2008/09.

He left Edgar Street for Bury and following a spell with Supersport in South Africa he signed for Oxford United in July 2011. He took over as goalkeeping coach in May 2012, following Alan Hodgkinson's retirement.
