Form Guide - Snapshot
- Oxford United: W1 D1 L3 from the previous five games. The performance and result against Bristol City on Saturday will have given the U’s faithful plenty of encouragement ahead of the clash with QPR. An influx of new signings, combined with an attacking approach under the new Head Coach, should provide the team with a strong platform to push for victory in what will be viewed as a must-win encounter.
- QPR: W1 D2 L2 in their last five. Currently sitting 11th in the EFL Sky Bet Championship, QPR have experienced a steady but inconsistent season, with results fluctuating throughout. A draw away at Stoke City last time out will have boosted their confidence, but they do remain without a win in any of their last five away games.
The Rivalry - A Quick Head-to-Head Check
When the two sides met at Loftus Road in October, there was little to separate them. The goalless draw was a fair reflection of the contest, although United will have felt they did enough to deserve all three points.
Prior to that meeting, the Yellows’ recent record against the Hoops has not been so encouraging, having failed to secure a win against the London side since 1998.
The Key Battles: Where Could This Game Be Won And Lost?
- United's New Midfield: With Cam Brannagan recently returning from injury and the January arrivals of Myles Peart-Harris, Yunus Konak and Jamie McDonnell, United are suddenly well stocked with options in midfield. McDonnell has been one of the standout performers across English football this season for tackles and ball recoveries during his time with Mansfield in League One, while his energy, alongside Konak’s dynamism, gives the U’s a noticeably different dimension through the middle of the park.
- Richard Kone vs Ciaron Brown: Saturday’s clean sheet against a Bristol City side that have not struggled for goals this season will give the U’s defence a major confidence boost ahead of another home fixture. Ciaron Brown has been a rock at the heart of the back line and will face a stern test against Ivory Coast international Richard Kone. The former Wycombe Wanderers striker offers a powerful physical presence alongside intelligent movement and link-up play that brings team-mates into dangerous attacking areas.
- Steve Cook vs Will Lankshear: Former Bournemouth centre-half Steve Cook, who made over 300 appearances for the Cherries, has added a wealth of experience to the QPR defence since joining in 2023. However, at 34, he is likely to face a stern examination against 20-year-old Yellows forward Will Lankshear, who has caused problems for most opposition back lines this season. The on-loan Spurs striker will fancy his chances following a string of positive performances in recent weeks.
Team News
The U’s will be continue to be without Tyler Goodrham , Nik Prelec and Jamie Donley through injury, while Przemysław Płacheta will also remain sidelined but is getting closer to being back to full fitness.
January has been a busy month for the Club, with several signings coming through the door. Jamie McDonnell could make his debut following his transfer from Nottingham Forest at the weekend, whilst other new boys Myles Peart-Harris and Yunus Konak could feature from the start once again.
For the visitors, top goal scorer Rumarn Burrell will miss the game with injury, while also being without Ilias Chair, Ziyad Larkeche, Kwame Poku, Koki Saito, Harvey Vale, Jake Clarke-Salter and Liam Morrison. Jonathan Varane is also a doubt with a knock.
'R' The Hoops Play-Off Contenders?
1) The R's arrive in OX4 just four points off the play-off spots despite sitting in midtable. Although results have been inconsistent, the quality of the squad is clear to see and on their day, Julian Stephan's side have the ability to beat any side in the division.
2) QPR have not struggled to score goals this season, and have bagged in 12 of their last 13 games in all competitions. Although unavailable for this game, forward Rumarn Burrell is the joint-second top scorer in the Championship and has been well supported by the likes of Richard Kone in providing an attacking threat.
3) Despite scoring 38 goals in the league, the fact their Goal Difference stands at -1 suggests where the problem lies. The Hoops are sixth-highest for goals conceded in the Championship, and this will give Matt Bloomfield plenty of encouragement that his attacking unit can trouble the QPR defence.
Richard Kone: Finding His Feet
Since joining QPR from Wycombe Wanderers, Richard Kone has quickly shown why he was such a coveted signing. He brings a strong physical presence and intelligent movement in the box, combining pace, strength and clinical finishing to trouble Championship defences - traits that saw him score prolifically in League One.
His ability to hold up play, link with team-mates and get into dangerous positions adds a new dimension to QPR’s attack, while his work rate and pressing off the ball fit well with Julien Stéphan’s system. Early goal contributions at Loftus Road suggest he’s adapting well to the step up and providing the R’s with a genuine goal threat at the top end of the pitch.
