Like the U’s, Leicester City suffered relegation from the Championship at the end of the 2025/26 season and are now preparing for a promotion push. The drop to League One meant back-to-back relegations for the Foxes, who have endured a remarkable fall from their Premier League title triumph just ten years ago. The former top flight champions will now be determined to bounce back, with their sights firmly set on securing promotion and beginning their journey back towards the Premier League.
In the home dugout this weekend will be Russell Martin following his appointment as Leicester City manager in June. The former Southampton and Rangers boss is known for his possession-based, progressive style and previously guided Southampton to Premier League promotion. Martin now faces the challenge of rebuilding Leicester in League One and leading the former champions back up the divisions. It has been a steady start to life at the club with the team earning five points from their opening four games and sitting tenth in the League One table.
HOW ARE BOTH CAMPS SHAPING UP?
The Yellows suffered their first defeat of the campaign on Tuesday night, going down 3-1 away to Huddersfield. Despite a positive performance and a second-half goal from Gatlin O'Donkor, the U’s were ultimately beaten by a strong Huddersfield side and will now be hoping to bounce back with a victory this weekend.
The squad has also seen some movement in the final week of the transfer window, with Stan Mills and Brian De Keersmaecker departing for Preston North End and Bristol City respectively. However, the U’s have moved quickly to strengthen, bringing in Kai Andrews and Luka Lynch on loan from Premier League clubs Coventry City and Aston Villa respectively.
After a tricky start to the season, Tuesday night saw Leicester City secure their first victory of the season at home to Plymouth Argyle.
It has been a summer of change at the club, with a new manager and several new players as well as a lot of outgoings following the drop from the Championship. The likes of Jordan Ayew, Harry Winks, Abdul Fatawu and Hamza Choudhury have all departed this summer, but a number of talented players have arrived, such as Wes Burns, Conor Chaplin and Liam Cullen to ensure the squad will be competitive at this level.
WHO COULD PROVE TO BE THE KEY MEN FOR EACH TEAM?
Northern Ireland international Ciaron Brown reached a significant milestone on Tuesday night, making his 200th appearance in yellow. Since joining United in 2021, the centre-half has established himself as an outstanding and hugely influential player, becoming a key figure at the heart of the U’s defence. His consistency, commitment and leadership have made him a firm favourite among supporters, and he remains one of United’s most important players.
Brown offers vast experience, versatility and plenty of defensive strength. A commanding centre-back, the Republic of Ireland international is known for his composure, physicality and ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch. His leadership and reliability have made him a key part of United’s defensive setup and he will hope to play many more games in Yellow in years to come.
One long-standing member of the Leicester City side that has remained in the East Midlands this season is midfielder Bobby De Cordova-Reid. The Jamaican international brings a wealth of top-level experience and attacking quality to Leicester City, having spent much of his career in the Premier League.
Formerly of Fulham and Bristol City, Reid is a versatile forward capable of playing across the front line, combining intelligent movement, technical ability and an eye for goal. His experience and attacking threat make him one of the Foxes’ key players as they look to mount a promotion challenge this season.
TEAM NEWS
For United, goalkeeper Jamie Cumming is still a doubt, while Aidomo Emakhu will miss the trip having sat out of the midweek trip to Huddersfield through injury.
New signings Luka Lynch could feature for the first time while fellow loanee Kai Andrews will be pushing for a start following his first appearance for the Club off the bench on Tuesday.
The biggest concern for Leicester is for goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk, who was stretchered off in the opening stages of the 3-0 win over Plymouth. He is unlikely to feature for the foreseeable.
Ben Nelson is also set to miss most of the season with a serious knee injury, while Conor Chaplin is unlikely to feature after being forced off in last weekend’s draw with MK Dons.
Kamari Doyle, John Lundstram and Emil Riis could feature in the matchday squad after signing for the Foxes on transfer deadline day.

PREVIOUS MEETING & HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD
The last meeting between these two sides was certainly one to remember for the U’s and their supporters. Just weeks into Matt Bloomfield’s reign, United made the trip to the King Power Stadium and came away with a memorable 2-1 victory, with Sam Long and Mark Harris finding the net.
Widely regarded as one of the U’s best away performances in recent memory, the team produced a display full of energy, character and quality, while the travelling supporters were in fine voice throughout. It was arguably the standout performance of the 2025/26 campaign and a result that will live long in the memory of everyone who made the trip to Leicester.
