Ron Atkinson

Date of birth

‘The Tank’ is arguably the most well-known player to have played for Oxford United and even without his high-profile in football management that came later, his fame is well-deserved. He was made captain of the club aged just 21 years, after Arthur Turner signed him from Aston Villa. He was club captain throughout the side’s rise from the Southern League to the Second Division and during his 12 years at the Manor he became the club’s record appearance holder, playing in 562 competitive games for United.
