GET TO KNOW OUR OPPONENTS
This season marks Stevenage’s fourth consecutive year in League One following their promotion from League Two in 2023. The club enjoyed a hugely successful campaign last time out, exceeding the expectations of many by finishing sixth and securing a place in the League One Play-Offs, before ultimately losing to Stockport County in the semi-finals.
Based in Hertfordshire and founded in 1976, the club has enjoyed a steady rise through the football pyramid, earning promotion to the Football League for the first time in 2010. Nicknamed “The Boro”, Stevenage play their home matches at Broadhall Way and are known for their strong community ties, passionate supporters and ambitious approach on and off the pitch.
Saturday’s hosts will be managed by Alex Revell. The 43-year-old former striker made more than 450 appearances across the Football League during a playing career that included spells with Brighton & Hove Albion and Rotherham United, before retiring in 2020 and moving into management. Appointed Stevenage manager in May 2024 following the departure of Steve Evans, Revell has developed a side that looks to attack with pace while maintaining a strong organisational structure, establishing the Boro as a competitive League One outfit with ambitions of promotion.
HOW ARE BOTH CAMPS SHAPING UP?
Both sides made remarkably similar starts to the new league campaign, with each scoring an injury-time equaliser to secure a point on the opening day.
While Aaron Ramsey would have been keen to claim all three points against MK Dons, he will have been pleased with the fighting spirit his side showed to battle back and earn a hard-fought draw against strong opposition. The U’s also impressed for large periods, enjoying 63% possession and dominating large periods of the game.
Stevenage, meanwhile, will have been relieved to come away from Burton Albion with a point after struggling to impose themselves on proceedings. It was former Fulham academy graduate and summer signing Olly Sanderson who rescued a point for the Boro late on, with the 22-year-old smashing home from close range in the dying minutes.
Neither side will be overly disappointed to have avoided defeat in their opening fixture, particularly given how easily the results could have gone against them. Both will now see this weekend’s meeting as a strong opportunity to secure their first victory of the season and build some early momentum.
WHO COULD PROVE TO BE THE KEY MEN FOR EACH TEAM?
The last time Oxford United competed in League One, during the 2023/24 season, Mark Harris played a pivotal role in the U’s promotion to the Championship, scoring 15 goals and providing four assists in the league.
He has already made a strong start to the new campaign, opening his account against MK Dons last weekend with a classic poacher’s finish after just 20 minutes. The goal showcased the clinical edge Harris possesses at this level, and he will be confident of replicating the form that made him such a key figure in Oxford’s promotion-winning campaign.
For Stevenage, one of the standout performers during their successful pursuit of the League One play-offs last season was young goalkeeper Filip Marschall. The former Aston Villa academy goalkeeper, who enjoyed loan spells with MK Dons and Crewe Alexandra before joining the Boro in 2025, capped an impressive campaign by collecting both the club’s Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season awards.
Marschall kept 19 clean sheets and finished the campaign with a 66% save percentage, underlining just how important he was to Stevenage’s success. The 22-year-old will be hoping to build on that impressive debut season and once again provide his side with a commanding presence between the posts.
TEAM NEWS
Frankie Kent, Ruben Roosken and Jin Woo Jeon are the only known members of the first team squad that are unavailable through injury.
After providing an electric spark from the bench last weekend, academy graduate Mo Missanga will be pushing for a starting place on the wing. Gatlin O’Donkor will also have his sights set on a place in the starting XI after making an impact from the bench against MK Dons, playing a key role in setting up Ciaron Brown’s equaliser.

PREVIOUS MEETING & HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD
The previous meeting between the two sides ended in a 1-1 draw at the Kassam Stadium in April 2024. It was the U’s final home game of the regular League One season and another valuable point towards securing a top-six finish.
Despite failing to register a single shot on target throughout the game, Stevenage took the lead before half-time through a Sam Long own goal. Thankfully for United, captain Cam Brannagan came to the rescue in the second half, confidently converting a penalty to earn his side a crucial point.
The result meant the U’s headed into the final day knowing they needed to beat Exeter City away from home, while also hoping Lincoln City would drop points against champions Portsmouth. Fortunately for United, both results went their way, securing their place in the play-offs - and, as they say, the rest is history.
