PREVIEW Peterborough United v Oxford United

A full guide to Saturday's Sky Bet League 1 game

8 December 2023

Oxford United head for Peterborough United on Saturday in Sky Bet League 1

It's third aganst fifth as the U's travel to a Posh side who have steadily closed the gap on the leaders and who, like the U's, will have the top two in their sights.

TEAM NEWS
United are without Marcus Browne, Kyle Edwards and Sam Long with Stephan Negru also a major doubt after limping off in the win at FGR on Tuesday night.

Several players were rested for that game but the likes of James Beadle and Cameron Brannagan are likely to return, as Skipper Elliott Moore told iFollow yesterday:

"We have had a lot of games and it's going to be really busy over the next month or so. Players need a break sometimes but everyone has come back in for training on Thursday and been excellent. Those who came into the side on Tuesday will want to keep their place and that provides serious competition.

"Peterborough will be a hard game. We have had some good games against them and it's two good sides who know the division and have respect for each other. But we have settled down under the new Manager, we are in decent form with three clean sheets in a row and it should be a very good game."

You can see more from Elliott below plus a full version, including his thoughts on captaincy, and a full interview with Des Buckingham in iFollow right now.

THE OPPOSITION
Peterborough are in good form at home, beating Cambridge 5-0 and Burton Albion 4-0 in their last two games, but Boss Darren Ferguson expects Oxford to present a difficult challenge.

“The game this week won’t be anything like the last two matches. Oxford are a very good side. They finished last season with good momentum under Liam which they had to do as they were fighting against relegation, but they’ve carried that momentum into this season. They signed some good players in the summer, some really good ones on loan, but they also have a lot of players who are experienced at League One level.

"Not a lot has changed under the new manager. I’ve watched a lot of their games and they are well organised, they have good quality and they are a real threat on the counter attack which we will have to watch. Oxford are always a very hard challenge at this level, but we are playing well. The players are happy which is important and you can see the belief in each other growing as well”.

Match Reports

REPORT Peterborough United 3 Oxford United 0

U's lose at the Posh. Full time report

9 December 2023

Oxford United were beaten 3-0 at Peterborough United this afternoon as first half goals from Hector Kyprianou and Ricky-Jade Jones and a late strike from Ryan De Havilland moved the home side above them in the League 1 table.

The first half saw United under the cosh from the Posh and although the second half was much improved most of the damage had already been done.

James Beadle, undoubtedly man of the match, had already made a good save after 17 minutes to kick away a Jones drive, but on 24 minutes another good save to push away a low effort only went as far as Harrison Burrows, who squared the ball across the six-yard box for Kyprianou to apply a simple finish from close range.

Peterborough had scored 5 and 4 in their last two home games and looked dangerous every time they went forward. On 34 minutes they were two goals up when the dangerous Ephron Mason-Clark flicked on and Jones ran clear down the centre of the pitch. Beadle came to meet him but this time was powerless when Jones touched the ball past him and rolled the ball into the vacant net.

It could have been worse had Beadle not made two further good saves before the break, the second from Jones a great save by the on-loan Brighton keeper, but United had underperformed in the first 45 minutes and failed to muster a shot on target.

Things needed to improve and they did. There was a first glimmer of hope when McGuane tried his luck two minutes after the break, and United were better, but still not testing home keeper Nicholas Bilokapic enough.

There were appeals for a penalty when Billy Bodin was bundled over after another good cross from the excellent Murphy, whose introduction breathed new life into the U's, and a flying save from Bilokapic to claw away a fierce McGuane effort after an hour, but there were warning signs at the other end as the game became stretched.

Beadle needed to make another terrific save to deny Jones at his near post, then a similar one on the other side from Mason-Clark. The improvement from the away team was clear, but so was the fact that you cannot give a good side like Peterborough a two-goal lead, and in injury time Peterborough removed even the slenderest of doubts when David Ajiboye danced down the right and clipped the ball across for De Havilland to fly in and score the third.

In the end United could have little argument with the result.

What better way to react that a local derby at Reading on Tuesday?

See you there.
