Kassam Stadium
Saturday 11 April, 3:00pm

Following the draw away to Portsmouth on Easter Monday, this weekend's game is another crucial one in the Sky Bet Championship run-in. A home game against midtable Watford will be seen as another golden opportunity to get three points on the board and climb out of the relegation zone.

FAB Disabled Supporters Drop-In Session

The OUFC Fan Advisory Board will be hosting a drop-in session for disabled supporters in the Exhibition Bar from 12:30pm on Saturday.

The session is designed to offer an informal, relaxed space for supporters to meet, share ideas, and provide feedback on their matchday experiences. It is also open to those with friends or family members who are disabled supporters, helping the club to better understand their needs and continue improving accessibility both on matchdays and across the wider Oxford United community.

Form Guide - Snapshot (League form)

  • Oxford United: W1 D3 L1 from the previous five games. Although the side were disappointed not to take all three points at Portsmouth on Monday, results elsewhere offered some consolation, with fellow teams around the drop zone also dropping points, leaving the overall picture unchanged. United are unbeaten in their last four matches at the Kassam and will be confident that their recent strong performances can carry them to victory against a side that has lost its last two away games.
  • Watford: W1 D2 L2 in their last five. While the Hornets may still feel they have an outside shot at the play-offs, the reality is that sitting nine points adrift at this stage leaves little margin for error. They will likely need a near-flawless run between now and the end of the season to break into the top six. With no wins in their last three matches, a return to form this weekend is essential if they are to keep their promotion hopes alive.

The Rivalry - A Quick Head-to-Head Check

Historically, United do not fare favourably against this weekend's opponents, with only eight wins from 42 games played.

In the meeting between the two sides at Vicarage Road earlier this season, Watford claimed the three points despite the U's taking an early lead. A quickfire double before half time from Jeremy Ngakia cancelled out an early own goal and secured the victory for the Hornets.

The last time the two teams faced off at the Kassam Stadium was in March 2025, when a late Siriki Dembele strike sealed an important win for the Yellows.

The overall head-to head record, stretching back to 1965, looks like this:

  • Oxford United have won 8 games
  • Watford have won 19 games
  • The teams have drawn 15 times

The Key Battles: Where This Game Could Be Won And Lost

  • How do Watford approach this game?: Given that Watford sit nine points adrift of sixth-placed Southampton, there are likely to be differing views on how the Hornets should approach both this match and the remainder of the season. Some will argue that a strong run of form could yet spark a late push for the play-off places, while others may feel the gap is simply too large, leaving their chances of a top-six finish all but gone. If the prevailing mood among players and supporters leans toward the latter, Watford’s approach becomes particularly intriguing. Do they continue to perform at full intensity in pursuit of an unlikely surge, or do they ease off and accept that promotion is now out of reach? Their mindset and level of commitment could prove decisive in shaping Saturday’s outcome.
  • Lankshear full of confidence: United’s leading forward, Will Lankshear, took his tally to 10 goals in all competitions this season with his strike against Portsmouth on Monday - an impressive return for a 20-year-old battling at the lower end of the Championship table. His powerful header against Pompey encapsulated his strengths perfectly: sharp instincts to find space in the six-yard box, coupled with a composed and clinical finish. The on-loan Spurs striker has spoken about the importance of continuing to add to his goal tally between now and the end of the campaign if the U’s are to secure survival. Brimming with confidence, he will back himself to be the difference-maker in ensuring United retain their place in the division.
  • Brodie Spencer off the mark and back to his best: The Northern Irish international opened his account for the club in the draw with Portsmouth, a goal that neatly capped a string of encouraging recent performances. Although Spencer has not been a regular starter this season, largely due to injury, he has found his rhythm in recent weeks. Quick, strong, and assured in possession, he is beginning to show his full range of qualities and will be confident of playing a key role as the campaign enters its final stages.

The Lowdown on The Hornet's topsy-turvy season

1) Not for the first time in recent years, Watford have endured a turbulent season, with further managerial changes bringing disruption and instability. Two switches in the dugout have left Edward Still in charge following his appointment in February, but results have yet to fully turn, with just three wins from his first ten games at the helm.

2) After a difficult start to the season, with just two wins from their opening seven matches, the return of Javi Gracia as manager sparked a strong turnaround, lifting the side into the top six by the start of 2026. However, Gracia’s resignation in early February has led to a turbulent spell under new boss Still. Many Watford supporters now feel their promotion hopes have slipped away, and defeat at the Kassam on Saturday would all but confirm that outcome.

3) Under Edward Still, Watford have largely played with a more traditional 4-4-2 style, focusing on intensity and vertical attacking play. His approach emphasises a compact defensive structure and aggressive pressing, with the aim of winning the ball high and transitioning quickly into forward areas. In possession, Watford look to move the ball forward at pace rather than sustain long spells of build-up, using wide players and runners in behind to stretch the opposition.

4) With the youngest average age in the division, Watford are a side brimming with energy and dynamism. They have also registered the fifth-highest number of shots on target, underlining their ability to create opportunities in the final third and consistently test opposition goalkeepers. Interestingly, they have been caught offside just 43 times this season, the lowest total in the Championship, highlighting their discipline and timing in the attacking third.

Stanley Mills Running Down The Wing 🎶

Tipped by the U's fans as a potential front runner for the Club's Player of the Season, winger Stan Mills has demonstrated his outstanding quality in recent weeks. One of Oxford United’s more consistent attacking outlets this season, Mills has contributed three goals and two assists this season, and although on the face of it those numbers may seem low, the impact he has had on the attacking unit cannot be underestimated.

Brodie Spencer’s goal at Portsmouth owed much to Stan Mills’ persistence on the right, with his curling effort forced into a save that fell kindly for Spencer to convert. While it won’t go down as an assist, it typifies the kind of chances Mills has been creating on a regular basis, particularly in the second half of the season. His strengths lie in his direct running, technical ability, and willingness to take defenders on, while his work rate and movement in wide areas make him a constant threat. Capable of producing key moments, Mills has shown he can influence games, and his energy and attacking intent will be vital if Oxford are to maintain their Championship status.
