Sheffield United… 3
(Peck 41’, Brooks 66’, Ogbene 83’)
Oxford United… 1
(Peart-Harris 14’)
Oxford United lost 3-1 to Sheffield United despite taking an early lead through Myles Peart-Harris.
United looked strong in the first period but went in level with a late Sheffield United goal, and then fell to two more in the second half to leave empty handed.
Oxford United had a controlled start to the game and took the lead inside 14 minutes. Myles Peart-Harris held off a Sheffield United midfielder before laying off to Cameron Brannagan with the long-range shot which Michal Cooper spilled. Peart-Harris was the man rushing in on the danger and he fired the ball into the top left corner for his first Oxford goal.
It took 20 minutes for the hosts to have their first shot of the evening, with Gustavo Hamer lashing a long-range drive just wide of Jamie Cumming’s right post.
Two minutes later and it was the turn of Will Vaulks to have a shot from distance, which again narrowly missed the right corner of the net.
With four minutes left, with United looking as if they were going to see the half out ahead, the hosts got back into it. Oxford were caught out on the left which allowed the cross to come into the box and find Sydie Peck unmarked and he calmy placed the ball into the bottom left corner.
Hamer almost scored a goal of the season contender one minute from time, clipping the crossbar with an audacious curling shot from over 30 yards out.
Into the second period and Peart-Harris almost had United back in front inside the opening minutes. Will Lankshear played a dangerous low ball into the box from the right and the former Brentford player powered in but was challenged by Femi Seriki who stopped him poking the ball in.
On the 66th minute, Sheffield United took the lead for the first time in the night. A slip from Ciaron Brown opened the opportunity for the ball to be played in down the right channel for Andre Brooks in the box, who turned onto his left foot and a dug a shot out and into the top left corner.
Then the final goal came with seven minutes remaining. Hamer picked out the perfect diagonal to Ogbene who got in behind Brodie Spencer and he slotted beyond Cumming to end the game.
Coventry City up next on Saturday away from home and another test for United.
