West Bromwich Albion… 1

(Bostock 33’)

Oxford United earned a vital three points over West Bromwich Albion in the first home victory of the year.

Goals from Stan Mills and Will Lankshear earned the win for the Yellows in front of a loud home support.

United got off to a fast start, looking for the early goal to gain a foothold in this important game.

There was some lovely early interchange between Myles Peart-Harris and Will Lankshear, which ended with the striker playing the ball into the box for the former Brentford man who turned a close-range shot on goal but it was deflected wide.

They wouldn’t have to wait long for the goal though, coming after 14 minutes from Stan Mills. A delightful corner from Jamie Donley on the right net the head of Mills perfectly, who managed to leap up above the rest and head into the top left corner.

It was 2-0 10 minutes later from another well-taken set piece. This time, Cameron Brannagan sent a free-kick in from the right which met the head of Will Lankshear six yards who bulleted a header beyond the keeper to send the United supporters into dreamland.

Unfortunately, West Brom did manage to get a goal back against the run of play on 33 minutes. A wild strike from Ollie Bostock looked set to run straight into the arms of Cumming, but it took a heavy deflection off a United defender and fell into the net.

The second period began with West Brom having to come at United to get back into the game. It was an extremely nervy opening 15 minutes with neither side looking to open up a space.

On 60 minutes, the visitors began applying pressure, but the United backline met every cross coming in to defend the box.

The visitors continued to push for an equaliser and did come close with a header late on, but otherwise, United defended the box superbly.

The Yellows saw the game out with experience, keeping the ball in the corner to secure a huge three points in the season.

The start of our final 12 games ends in a win, now, Preston North End in the Friday night fixture.
