PREVIEW Charlton Athletic v Oxford United

A full guide to today's game at the Valley

1 January 2024

Oxford United look to kick off 2024 with a win as they travel to Charlton Athletic today (3pm)

Defeat at home to Derby last time out saw the U's drop to sixth in the Sky Bet League 1 table  but they have a chance to do their first double of the season after a 2-1 win over the Addicks at the Kassam Stadium back in August.

TEAM NEWS
Both Tyler Goodrham and Stan Mills are doubtful after limping off during the Derby game as United's wretched run of injuries continues.

Sam Long, Stephan Negru, James Golding, Greg Leigh, George Franklin, Josh Johnson, Marcus Browne, Billy Bodin, Kyle Edwards and Josh Murphy were all ruled out of the last game and young forward Max Woltman is added to the squad, having just recovered from injury himself.

OPPOSITION
Michael Appleton's side are also troubled by injuries. The Addicks will be without Harry Isted (knee), Conor McGrandles (calf), Terry Taylor (ankle), Panutche Camará (hamstring), Chuks Aneke (hamstring) and Miles Leaburn (hamstring) while top scorer Alfie May is 50/50 with a hamstring injury.

“I think with Alfie it's going to be a late call again, similar to how it was against Bristol Rovers. He’s 50/50 as it is at this moment in time" the former Oxford Boss said. “In terms of how Oxford approach the game and their style, we can prepare ourselves for that knowing what's coming. They had a couple of influential players who came off against Derby and you see the reports that they are probably similar to Alfie with a 50/50 chance of playing. Stuff like that can make it a little bit difficult, so you just have to be ready and mindful that you may have to have two or three scenarios going into the game, knowing what they can bring.”
