PREVIEW Liam Manning on FGR

No let up as the U's look for second win in a week

27 April 2023

Oxford United look to build on Tuesday’s midweek win over Cheltenham with a second win in a row when they travel to Forest Green Rovers on Saturday.

A first win in 18 attempts lifted the U’s but as Boss Liam Manning told iFollow, his side will not allow the hard work to drop after just one win.

“We definitely won’t let up after just one result” he said. “We have spoken about that today. All we will do is focus on what allowed us to go and win the game on Tuesday and allowed us to play well in the games before and that will allow us to go and be ready for Saturday.

“We should have more points than we have, although all Managers will say that. So then you look at what things we did well. We defended really well and we have got progressively better at that with each game. It hasn’t been at the expense of creating chances though, everyone knows we have been creating a huge number of chances and not taking them. On Tuesday the conviction was there in our finishing as well.

“We have tried to give the players clarity in what we want them to do in all phases of play and I have to give huge credit to the players who have really bought into it, lapped up the information, and put that into games. The belief is there: we could have come out at 1-0 up at half time the other night like at Morecambe and just try to hold on but we didn’t, we took the game to the opposition and got on the front foot.

“Forest Green are already relegated but they have careers and futures to play for and they have Duncan Ferguson as Manager, somebody who has worked at the highest levels and will not allow anyone to ease off.

“We will do the same amount of prep as we do for every game, work on the opposition and how they set up, their strengths and weaknesses, but the emphasis switches back on to us and making sure we have the right level of respect, discipline and intent and transferring those in to the game itself.

“Injury wise we had good news on the scan and Gatlin O’Donkor will be back sooner rather than later. Tyer Goodrham is being assessed this afternoon again just to see where he is at but since coming into the side he has grabbed his opportunity so hopefully we see him again before the end of the season.”
