PREVIEW Women Take on Bridgwater on Sunday

Big game for Oxford United Women this weekend

24 September 2021

Oxford United Women return to league action on Sunday when they welcome Bridgwater United Women to Court Place Farm for a big game in the Women’s National League.

Bridgwater are one of three undefeated teams in the league this season with three wins and two draws from their five matches putting them up there with the early pacesetters and one point ahead of the U’s.

“It’s still very early to be studying the league table too closely” Manager Liam Gilbert told us. “There is a long way to go but Bridgwater are clearly a good team and it’s going to be a tough game for us.

“We have started the season strongly ourselves and the squad has settled down nicely. We are gong to be without Kayleigh Hines for a while and I said after her injury that we would be looking for people to step up and take their chance in the team- that has already happened and we are in good form so it should be a really good game of football on Sunday.”

New signing Rachel Panting stands by for her league debut after joining from Southampton while top scorer Beth Lumsden will be looking to add to her five goals from four starts so far.

It’s the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon, watching great football at the friendly surroundings at Court Place Farm.

Admission is just £5 for adults, £3 for over 65s and FREE to Oxford United Season Ticket holders and under 16s.

Kick off is at 2pm

Impressive U's move up the table

26 September 2021

Oxford United Women continued their strong start to the National League campaign with an excellent  3-0 win at home to previously unbeaten Bridgwater at Court Place Farm this afternoon

Goals from Carly Johns, Sophie Baker and a great free kick from Beth Lumsden were enough to see the U’s leapfrog their opponents in the table.

United started brightly and Johns came close after just seven minutes when her cross-shot clipped the top of the bar. Johns was causing huge problems for Bridgwater and that was evident again five minutes later when she was brought down in the box, winning a penalty. Johns dusted herself down and buried the spot kick into the corner despite the keeper going the right way.

United continued to apply pressure and a Lauren Haynes shot from distance whistled just over the bar but it was 2-0 in the 25th minute when Daisy McLachlan slid through Baker who finished brilliantly from just inside the penalty area.

Bridgwater did come back into the game before half time but were thwarted by Rose Kite in the United goal.

The second half started in a scrappy manner with few chances to report but United introduced Rachel Panting for her debut with twenty minutes remaining and she showed some good touches up top.

The U’s got their third soon after when top scorer Lumsden fired a delightful free kick into the top corner from the edge of the area.

United could have added further goals late on, substitute Sarah King scuffing her shot straight at the keeper although Bridgwater pushed for a consolation but were denied by a point blank save by Kite.

A brilliant performance and result for Liam Gilbert’s side.
