PREVIEW Oxford United U18 v Gillingham U18

Young U's take on the GIlls

18 March 2022

Oxford United under 18s continue their Merit League Campaign with a home game against Gillingham on Saturday.

The Merit League combines the top five clubs from the Youth Alliance South East and South West Divisions and the U’s welcome a Gills side who currently top the table.

United have won one and lost one of their two games and Coach Pablo Haysham told us

“We did well against Portsmouth last time out and want to carry that on. It is all about building for next year at the moment so we will have a young squad again with a number of under 16s steopping up and getting used to playing against slightly older sides which can only help their development in the long run.”

The game takes place at the Bangkok Glass Training Centre at 11am

Young U's draw with the Gills

19 March 2022

Oxford United’s under 18s were held to a goalless draw at home to Gillingham this morning in the Merit League

United used the game to again look at a number of under 16s and trialists and will be pleased with the performance against a Gills side who started the day top of the table.

The two teams started brightly in this highly contested fixture, with the game going back and forth for the first 30 minutes. The best chance of the half fell to Gillingham, who enjoyed the majority of the possession, with a clever free-kick dinked to the back post that was narrowly headed wide.

With strong sideways winds, the set-pieces were hard to predict but United’s defence handled them well.

United’s opponents started the second half strongly with their first attack leading to a shot hitting the outside of the post but both teams then had good spells with the best chances of the game coming from free-kicks on a day when defences were on top.
