The 2024/25 season is one that will forever be remembered by all Oxford United fans, as the team took part and competed in the Championship for the first time in 25 years.
Holding their own, United defeated some of the league’s biggest teams, defeating the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Norwich City, Sunderland, Sheffield United alongside many others, creating incredible memories along the way.
Cementing safety in the league on the final home game of the season, Oxford won 53 points throughout the campaign, to finish 17th in the table.
Throughout the season, the support from the Yellow Army has been crucial, creating an incredible united atmosphere both and away to fight against some of the most well-known names in English football. Our home ground has been as loud as it’s ever been, helping the U’s pick up 16 wins or draws out of 23 in OX4.
The season began back in August, with the Sky Sports’ cameras in situ for the biggest sporting event in Oxford in more than 25 years, as the Club were finally back in the second tier to take on last season’s play-off pushing Norwich City. In one of the performances of the season, goals from Mark Harris and Cameron Brannagan earned a 2-0 win.
Three wins were taken from the first six games, with further victories coming against Preston North End and Stoke City, with United feeling at home in the division, picking up another point against Burnley to close off September.
October saw the team undefeated in four out of five games, picking up a point against Luton Town, Portsmouth, West Brown and Derby County. However, by December, the wins had dried up, and following a 3-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, Gary Rowett replaced Des Buckingham as Head Coach.
Not in the dugout in time to take on Leeds United at Elland Road, Gary’s arrival sparked a huge uptake in form, going undefeated in his opening nine games, winning five against Cardiff City, Plymouth Argyle, Millwall at The Den, Blackburn Rovers, and Luton Town.
As the season reached its crunch point in March, United defeated Watford, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, and then Sunderland. Cameron Brannagan’s Goal of the Season away to Cardiff also earned a crucial point in that eight-game run, each result helping secure Oxford’s place in the Championship again next season.
Across this season, a huge thank you needs to go to you, the supporters. Both home and away you have made the difference. Midweek journeys to the likes of Hull and Plymouth don’t go unnoticed, and it is that support which has pushed the team over the line.
At the Kassam Stadium, you have sold-out every single league home game. It can’t be said enough how important that is, and once again we will need that support with us for next season.
