REACTION: Women's Side Encouraged by Plate Performance

Reaction from Liam Gilbert and Cheryl Williams plus details on FAWNL Plate 2nd Round Fixture

Oxford United Women went through in the FAWNL Plate in style on Sunday with an 8-1 victory over Norwich City Ladies.

The win means United Women have scored 36 goals in their last five outings, conceding only four times as they continue their good form this season. First team manager Liam Gilbert told us:

“I’m happy with the performance but more so with the application," he told us. "Coming off the back of last week’s game we wanted to be better and wanted to see more from the players in terms of commitment and drive and we saw that today.

“One day we can’t miss and the other we can’t score, so it’s nice to take our chances today. We definitely don’t have any issue creating them it’s just making sure we are continuously putting the ball into the back of the net.”

The Women’s side put eight past Norwich on Sunday, with five different goalscorers. Sophie Baker, Carly Johns, Georgia Timms, Brogan Moore and Immy Lancaster all got on the scoresheet alongside Cheryl Williams who grabbed a hat trick herself.

“I think we’ve shown that clinical edge, we’ve changed it up and other people have come into the starting lineup so that’s a positive,” Williams told us after the game. “It’s good to see people come off the bench, react well and score goals so it’s nice for lots of goals to be spread across different positions.

“Obviously playing up front that’s the aim to score goals so I’m happy to do that. With the third one I’ve seen the goalkeeper come out, she started to get her body low and was obviously off her line, so I’ve just gone for it and luckily it’s gone in. Hopefully we can build on today’s performance moving forward and start really kicking on in the league and obviously in the cup games for the rest of this year.”

The win means United Women will face Watford Ladies in the 2nd round of the FAWNL Plate. The match will be played on Sunday 24th November.

Next up, Liam Gilbert's side are at home again on Sunday as they face Keynsham Town in the FA Women's National League (2pm).
