Oxford United… 2
(Lee 11’, Missanga 48’)
Wigan Athletic… 0
Oxford United advanced into the Fourth Round of the FA Youth Cup after a dominant 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic at the Kassam Stadium.
The young boys had the opportunity to play at the Men’s First Team stadium, and they took it with both hands, putting on an exciting display to move on in the cup.
Goals from Jack Lee and Mo Missanga were enough, in a game with plenty of more opportunities for United, as they continue their FA Youth Cup adventure this season.
Oxford got off to a flying start with number nine, Jack Lee, opening the scoring inside 11 minutes. It was a moment to forget for the Wigan keeper, who missed the flight of the ball with his clearance, and it gave Lee the chance to tap into an empty net.
The United youngsters were thriving, and had a number of chances to double the lead shortly after. Mo Missanga went close on 16 minutes but was prevented by a last-ditch challenge. Then on 24 minutes he went one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but he couldn’t find the net.
Wigan did show some threatening moments and Daniel Gelhardt almost equalised on 30 minutes when his shot cannoned off the post.
It didn’t deter United, with two big opportunities before half-time. First of all, Mubarak Abolade tried to finish a stunning passing move, but his shot was deflected and turned just wide.
Then, Lee had the chance to double his tally for the night, but his header from a corner on the 35th minute came off the crossbar from a few yards out.
Into the second half and United got the second goal they deserved. Missanga, having missed two good opportunities in the first period, he didn’t miss this chance as he was played in behind the Wigan defence. With a pass on for Lee, he decided to take the shot on himself and he slotted it into the bottom right corner.
Captain Charlie Cramond was sent off for a second yellow card shortly after, however, it was hard to notice the difference as United kept Wigan at bay.
United showed real quality throughout the game, and spent good spells dominating after the second goal went in, with Josh Holton and Calum Doyle dominating the middle of the park.
The chances kept coming for United, with Missanga forcing another strong save from the keeper with 15 minutes to go.
The game did get feisty towards the end as Wigan tried to get back into the game, but United saw it out with relative ease.
