Hashtag United… 0
Oxford United… 5
(Quirk 31’, Manders 45’, Casley 56’, Wiseman 68’, Legg 77')
Oxford United Women continued their fantastic start to the season by defeating Hashtag United 5-0 in another dominant away performance.
Goals from Sophie Quirk, Holly Manders, Riva Casley, Kate Wiseman and Jenna Legg made it six consecutive wins to start the season, with United still yet to concede a goal.
Hashtag made the brighter start, putting Oxford on the back foot during the opening stages. However, Oxford soon settled into the contest and began to impose themselves, with Maisy Barker causing problems through a series of darting runs.
Liam Gilbert's side continued to build pressure and pinned Hashtag back, forcing the hosts to rely on long passes. Oxford came close to opening the scoring in the 23rd minute when Maddie Brant delivered a dangerous cross towards Manders, whose header drifted narrowly wide.
Oxford made the breakthrough in the 31st minute. Legg battled to win possession before sending a perfectly weighted ball forward to Quirk, who drove into the box and calmly slotted the finish beyond the goalkeeper.
The goal gave Oxford greater control, and they enjoyed much of the possession as they searched for a second. They found it shortly just before the break, with Manders powering the ball into the back of the net in the 45th minute. It continues the midfielder's outstanding form with a whopping 13 goals in the opening six matches.
Oxford continued to dominate and extended their lead just nine minutes later. Following a short free-kick, Quirk's ball into the box was met by Casley at the back post to head United into a three-goal lead.
Dominating possession, Oxford made the home team work hard. The advantage grew further in the 68th minute when Palmer pulled the ball back from the byline, finding Wiseman in the box to complete the move.
Legg then capped an outstanding performance with Oxford’s fifth goal in the 77th minute. A corner was cleared as far as the United Captain who fired a spectacular first-time effort into the bottom corner from 30 yards.
There was still time for further drama when Quirk was brought down inside the box in the 84th minute. Palmer stepped up to take the resulting penalty, but the shot was well-saved by the Hashtag goalkeeper.
Oxford made four late substitutions, with Ruby Sealey replacing Barker, Emma Thompson returning from concussion to replace Wiseman, Ellie-Mae Richardson coming on for Manders and Shelly Provan taking Brant’s place. Eva Burgess was also introduced for Quirk in stoppage time as Oxford saw out a thoroughly convincing victory.
Five different goalscorers underlined Oxford’s attacking quality, while their defensive organisation ensured Hashtag were unable to find a way into the match. It was a commanding performance from Oxford United, who secured an emphatic 5–0 win and remain top of the WNL Southern Premier Division.
United will return to the MGroup Stadium this weekend for more league action when they host Plymouth Argyle on Sunday 20 September. Get your tickets HERE.
