Oxford United are delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Jamie McDonnell on a long-term contract from Premier League side Nottingham Forest.
The 21-year-old arrives with significant senior experience, having spent the first half of this season on loan at Mansfield Town, where he made 25 appearances across all competitions and established himself as a key figure in League One.
McDonnell also enjoyed a highly successful loan spell with Colchester United during the 2024/25 season, winning the club’s Young Player of the Year award and earning a place in the League’s Team of the Year for his influential performances in midfield.
A Northern Ireland international with two senior caps, McDonnell goes straight into the squad for Tuesday’s Sky Bet Championship fixture against Queens Park Rangers.
Speaking after completing his move, McDonnell said: “I’m very excited to be here and to get started at Oxford United. It’s a Club full of ambition, and that was really important to me as I sign a long-term deal.
“I feel I’ve learnt a lot from my loan spells and grown with every step I’ve taken so far. I’m ready to challenge myself at this level now and give everything for the team.
“I’m a midfielder who wants to be involved in all aspects of the game, work hard for the badge and keep improving. I can’t wait to play in front of the supporters and show what I can bring to the Club.”
Oxford United Head Coach, Matt Bloomfield added: “Jamie is a really exciting young player and one we’re delighted to welcome to Oxford United. At every level he’s played, he’s stepped up and shown maturity, authority and a real understanding of the game that goes beyond his age.
“He has excellent quality in midfield, a strong work ethic and a real desire to improve. He’s already gained valuable experience in senior club and international football, and we believe he has a very big future here at the Club.
“I’ve spent a lot of time with Ed Waldron and the recruitment department since arriving to secure the players we want to bring in during this window. Jamie is a player full of ambition and fight, and we agreed he is the right profile for what we need now, and going forward.”
Head of Football Operations, Ed Waldron said: “This is a signing that demonstrates our ambition for both the present and the future. Jamie is ready to contribute now, but we also see enormous long-term potential in him.
“He has consistently impressed us with his development and performances. His loan spells have been hugely positive, and each move has seen him take on responsibility, influence games and show real leadership qualities.
“We’re pleased to have acted quickly to bring another exciting young player to Oxford United and further strengthen the squad Matt has available to him.”
