Cameron Brannagan Confirmed As Oxford United Captain

Cameron Brannagan

Cameron Brannagan has been confirmed as the new Oxford United captain, with Michal Helik appointed vice-captain.

The midfielder will take over the captaincy following the departure of Elliott Moore.

Helik now steps up into Brannagan’s position of vice-captain, having previously captained Huddersfield Town before he joined Oxford in January.

Brannagan takes on the role having spent the last seven years at the Club, racking up 331 appearances and scoring 59 goals during that time.

Speaking to OUTV, Brannagan said: “This is a very proud moment for me and my family.

“I’ve been here for a long time, and it’s been an incredible journey so far. It’s a big privilege to be given this honour and I want to continue to push forward and create new memories.

“I learnt a lot from Elliott, who was a great guy and is a big part of the Club’s history, helping to take us back to the Championship as captain. I now want to lead in my own way and be the person who stands up in big moments.

“I want to lead by example off the pitch and in training every day. It’s about setting standards and being the positive influence that the collective follow.

“We need everyone together this season. It’s not just about the players - we need the whole Oxford United family fighting as one. This is a special feeling and together I want us to deliver as much success as we can.”

Head Coach, Gary Rowett, said: “First of all, everyone at the Club would like to wish Elliott all the best going forward after a fantastic career leading Oxford United over many years.

“We have selected Cameron as he is someone who always steps up when the pressure is on. He can be inspirational on the pitch, and we want him to continue to lead in that manner and push the group forward.

“Michal now gets an opportunity as vice-captain to step up and show the natural tendencies which he has to lead both on and off the pitch.

“Both will have the responsibility to lead the culture and the standards every day at our Training Centre to ensure we have a professional and committed environment going forward.”
