GET TO KNOW OUR OPPONENTS
Barnsley Football Club, founded in 1887, have a proud tradition and a passionate fanbase. Known as The Reds, Barnsley play their home matches at Oakwell Stadium and have spent much of their history competing in the English Football League. One of the club's greatest achievements came in 1912, when they won the FA Cup after beating West Bromwich Albion in the final replay. Barnsley have also enjoyed spells in the top two divisions of English football, most notably reaching the Premier League for the first time in the 1997/98 season.
The club's history has been marked by periods of success and difficult spells, reflecting the challenges of competing in the English football pyramid. In recent seasons, Barnsley finished fourth in League One in 2022/23, collecting 86 points, before finishing sixth in 2023/24 and reaching the play-off semi-finals. Their league form has since declined, with 12th place in 2024/25 and 15th in 2025/26. In the current 2026/27 campaign, Barnsley have struggled for consistency and are currently sitting 23rd after 11 matches, with eight points.
The man in charge of driving Barnsley up the division and away from relegation trouble is Daniel Stendel. Stendel is a former professional striker who is currently in his second spell as head coach of Barnsley.
The 52-year-old began his coaching career at Hannover 96 in Germany in 2007, working his way through the club's youth system before taking charge of the first team in 2016. He joined Barnsley in June 2018 and made an immediate impact, guiding the club to automatic promotion from League One in the 2018/19 season, finishing second with an impressive 91 points and remaining unbeaten at Oakwell throughout the league campaign. His high-energy, attacking style of football made him a popular figure among supporters, and he recorded 31 wins in 66 matches during his first spell.
However, following a difficult start to life in the Championship, he departed in October 2019. Stendel subsequently managed Scottish side Heart of Midlothian, French club AS Nancy and Hannover 96's reserve team before returning to Barnsley in May 2026. His return has brought renewed optimism among supporters, with the German manager hoping to recreate the success of his first spell.
HOW ARE THE YELLOWS SHAPING UP?
The opening 11 games of Oxford United's League One campaign have seen the U's pick up six wins, four draws and just one defeat, making it an extremely positive start to the season.
Tuesday night's home victory over Stockport County could arguably be viewed as their most impressive result so far. Facing a side sitting second in the table before kick-off, renowned for their attacking threat and ability to dominate possession, United produced an excellent performance to secure all three points. Mark Harris proved to be the difference-maker, scoring the only goal of the game and taking his tally to five for the season. The striker appears to be rediscovering his best form and will be hoping to build on this promising start as he targets a return to the 15-goal mark he previously achieved at this level.
Another major positive for United supporters will be the team's defensive resilience, having recorded back-to-back clean sheets against two of the division's strongest sides. Both the defensive unit and goalkeeper Jamie Cumming deserve considerable credit for their recent performances, limiting the opposition's attacking opportunities and preventing some of the league's most dangerous forwards from finding the net.
Ramsey will now be keen to ensure his side maintain these impressive standards and build on the momentum they have generated. With the league table beginning to take shape, United will undoubtedly have their sights set on challenging for top spot and maintaining their place among the leading sides as they approach an increasingly demanding festive fixture schedule.
WHO COULD PROVE TO BE THE KEY MEN FOR EACH TEAM?
Siriki Dembélé could prove to be a key figure for Oxford United when they face Barnsley this weekend, with his pace, creativity and attacking quality making him an important part of the U's side. The forward possesses the ability to cause problems for opposition defences, using his excellent close control, quick feet and direct running to take on defenders and create opportunities in dangerous areas. Dembélé has also demonstrated that he can make a difference in the final third this season, contributing goals and assists while providing an additional attacking threat from wide positions. His versatility allows him to operate across the forward line, making him difficult for opponents to track and giving Oxford another dimension in attack. Having recently continued to make an impact in United's attacking play, he will be hoping to carry that influence into the weekend's encounter against the Tykes. His ability to beat his marker, create chances and produce moments of individual quality could make all the difference in what is likely to be a competitive contest.
Patrick Kelly is one of Barnsley's most exciting young talents and could be a key player for the Reds both this weekend and for the remainder of the campaign. The Northern Irish midfielder, who joined Barnsley in 2025, has quickly established himself as an important member of the side, demonstrating maturity and versatility despite his young age. Comfortable operating in both attacking and deeper midfield roles, Kelly offers energy, creativity and an ability to drive his team forward. He has made an impressive start to the 2026/27 campaign, registering one goal and two assists in his opening 11 League One appearances, while also earning international recognition with Northern Ireland's senior side. His ability to create opportunities, carry the ball into dangerous areas and contribute at both ends of the pitch makes him a player United will need to keep a close eye on. If Kelly is given time and space in midfield, he has the quality to cause the U's plenty of problems.
TEAM NEWS
There are no fresh injury concerns for Aaron Ramsey ahead of this weekend's game. Following a busy week, the Welshman may well make some rotation to the side, but he has a healthy squad to be able to select from.
Jamie McDonnell remains out with a hamstring injury.

PREVIOUS MEETING & HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD
The two sides last met in January 2024, when Barnsley claimed a narrow 1-0 victory at the Kassam Stadium. A first-half own goal proved to be the difference between the teams in what was a scrappy and largely uneventful encounter.
However, the previous meeting at Oakwell was a much more memorable occasion for Oxford United supporters. Goals from Cameron Brannagan and Tyler Goodrham helped the U's secure an impressive 3-1 victory in August 2023, completing a remarkable three wins in the space of a week. The result was particularly significant, bringing an end to a 30-year wait for an away victory against Barnsley and giving United supporters a memorable afternoon in South Yorkshire.
