Des Buckingham Reflects On Play-Off Final

Des Buckingham arrived back to Oxford United in November 2023 after 10 years away from his city and his club.

By May 2024, Buckingham was standing in the royal box of Wembley Stadium, lifting the Sky Bet League One Play-Off Final trophy in front of more than 30,000 fans in yellow.

Once again, United will be back in the Championship, ending a 25-year hiatus for the U's thanks to Josh Murphy's two goals in a 2-0 win over Bolton Wanderers.

The Head Coach reflected on the incredible occasion on Saturday, May 18, a day that all those connected will remember forever.

He said:“I can’t put it into words, and that’s what makes it so special. I know what this means to everybody associated with this football club.

“To do it the way we just have, I’m so proud of what I’ve just watched.

“I thought the way we executed that game plan was perfect, we did what we wanted to with the ball, and I thought it was a proper team performance.

“We were coming up against a wonderful side, and we know that ourselves. We know how good they can be.

“But to share that moment and see a sea of yellow celebrating, it was a very special moment.”
