LAST WORD: Mark Harris on Carlisle

Mark Harris scored the winner on his home debut as Oxford United notched their first win of the season on Saturday.

The Welsh international striker slotted home the only goal of the game to get United up and running and as he told iFollow after the game, those first three points meant everything to the U’s:

“The win was so important” he said. “The later the game went on the more I think that was in our heads. We got the goal and got the three points and that’s what you come here on the Saturday to get so thankfully it all worked out well.

“We stuck at it. Maybe the first ten minutes we were under pressure but we knew that was what Carlisle would look to do so it was about riding that out really. Then we started to play our game, get on the ball and get in behind them.

“I had a chance earlier in the game where I got in behind them but cut back and lost the opportunity; looking back now I should have gone on my own. That was in my head when it happened a second time. As I got on the ball I thought ‘I’m going on my own this time’ but when I looked up Ruben was screaming at me and in a better position! I was a bit more selfish this time and luckily we got there.

“It came off the outside of my foot. Everyone thought I tried to lob the keeper but I actually didn’t; the guy is six foot nine! What came off was near enough what I tried to do, so we’ll take it.

“That’s my first of the season and we got a win. As a number 9 you do want to get off the mark. I got one in pre-season here but today is when it matters, when there are three points on the line. So to get that first win and to get the winning goal means I’m buzzing.”
