PREVIEW Oxford United v Portsmouth

A full guide to Saturday's Sky Bet League 1 game

4 February 2022

Oxford United welcome Portsmouth to the Kassam Stadium on Saturday in Sky Bet League 1.

Another bumper crowd is expected as the U's look to turn a good week into a great one with a win to follow a record 7-2 win at Gillingham last Saturday and a 1-1 draw at Wigan on Tuesday.

TEAM NEWS
New faces Ciaron Brown, Oisin Smyth and Sam Baldock could all feature with Baldock signing today as a free agent after spending the first half of the season at Derby County

Marcus Browne will be given a couple of weeks to get fully up to speed after his arrival from Middlesbrough but Gavin Whyte could return to the squad after illness.

James Henry, Jamie Hanson and Alex Gorrin are all ruled out through injury.

THE OPPOSITION
Boss Danny Cowley signed Hayden Carter, Tyler Walker, Ollie Webber, Denver Hume and Aiden O’Brien during the window and has been at a few of United's games recently in preparation for Saturday

“Oxford are a very good team, particularly in possession" he said. "I watched them against AFC Wimbledon recently and they were outstanding. They played through their opponents and got around them, while they get numbers in the box and carry a real offensive threat.

“I also saw Oxford more recently against Gillingham and they had total control, while they were awarded four penalties – I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before.

“Against Wigan on Tuesday, they had to show the other side of their game and really dug in. It was a feisty affair and I anticipate a tough test at the weekend.”
