Man of the Match, Player of the Month, five goals and seven more points on the board: quite a week for Cameron Brannagan who scored a crucial goal for the U’s in their 3-2 win over Portsmouth on Saturday

“It was a pretty good week” he said modestly. “I don’t know what’s going on! But I do know that when that third goal went in it was the best feeling ever. To celebrate in front of our fans meant so much and we worked hard for that win.

“We were unfortunate with a few things, we kept missing chances and I just thought that maybe it wasn’t going to be our day. It was frustrating but in the end we notched two really good goals and that feeling was amazing.”

Cameron was at the centre of everything, including a red card for Joe Morrell in the first half.

“I pulled him and said “mate you are unlucky” and said to the ref that I didn’t think it was a red. He caught me but I put my head down, but in the end the decision is not really my problem. It’s hard when you play against ten men though. Any footballer will tell you, when you lose a man the rest of you drop and when there are ten men behind the ball it’s difficult to break that down. It took two sepcial goals in the end but luckily we found a way.”

Cameron's spectacular 25-yard drive made it 2-2 and was the turning point for the U’s.

“I had tried about three of those shots in the game already and when I got it out of my feet there were three or four lads saying “don’t shoot”! But I hit it so well it just flew in and I’m happy with myself because I work on that a lot.

“People don’t see it but I have been working on my finishing and I get frustrated sometimes when I miss chances I feel I should have done better- there was one in the first half. But the goal was a good one.

“Now we move on to Accrington on Tuesday. All of us just want to keep playing at the moment, keep it rolling and hopefully keep winning. We want to get out of this league and try to keep getting results so we will work as hard as we can every single day and we can’t wait for the two games this week.”
