PREVIEW Oxford United v Gillingham

A full guide to Saturday's Sky Bet League 1 game at the Kassam Stadium

16 April 2021

Oxford United welcome Gillingham to the Kassam Stadium on Saturday (5.30pm)

The U's look to build on 10 goals in their last two games with just one conceded as both clubs look to close the gap on the play-off places.

TEAM NEWS
United are likely to be without Brandon Barker who felt his hamstring tighten up during Tuesday night's 4-1 win over Shrewsbury and was taken off as a precaution. The U's are waiting on the results of a scan but the on-loan Rangers man should feature again this season even if he is ruled out on Saturday.

Elliot Lee is set to play against brother Olly for the first time while defender Sam Long marked his 100th start for the U's with a goal on Tuesday.

Rob Hall and Alex Gorrin are back in training leaving only Marcus McGuane and John Mousinho unavailable.

THE OPPOSITION
Gillingham are three points behind the U's and manager Steve Evans gave his squad, including former United men Alex MacDonald, Jordan Graham and Robbie Cundy, a little extra time off this week

“We made the decision many weeks ago for the boys to have a couple of days off, to freshen up, they have come back in remarkable shape" he said. "Training has been of a real high quality, there is a real freshness about the group, the skipper walked into training saying he feels so good. They are fresh, ready and eager to play.”

“Currently Oxford are fantastic,” he added. “Any team that goes to Crewe and scores six. It could have been more. I watched them score four against Shrewsbury and we couldn’t score against them.“They are an excellent squad and they have many many gifted individuals. We don’t hide from the fact that we will have to be at our best to compete with a really good Oxford side, especially one who are in the form they are now.

“We are very capable of going to Oxford and making it a contest but at the same time if we are not, we will get a Crewe or a Shrewsbury, because they are very gifted.”
