Lee family face each other for the first time as U's take on Gillingham

15 April 2021

There’s a first for the Lee family on Saturday when brothers Elliot and Olly face each other for the first time as professional footballers.

The pair played alongside each other plenty of times at Luton but come face-to-face for the first time when the U’s take on GIllingham at the Kassam Stadium.

“We’ve not played against each other since we were in the back garden as kids” younger brother Elliot told iFollow earlier today. ”We played in the same reserve team at West Ham and I remember setting him up for a goal, then we had a year together at Luton and got promoted.

“We are more like best mates than brothers and we have talked about the game a lot and we are both going to want to win it. Doesn’t matter what sport it is, you always want to beat your brother don’t you? He claims to have improved at golf and thinks he can beat me now, but we’ll see about that! I know on Saturday we will both be wanting to win for our team.”

Dad Rob, formerly of Charlton, Newcastle and England is hoping to be at the game to keep an eye on his sons:

“If he’s allowed to then that would be great” Elliot says. “Obviously having a dad who has played the game has helped both of us. He never put pressure on us to be footballers, it was only a positive thing and not many people get the chance to go home after a game and talk to an England international about what they did right and wrong. I know he’s looking forward to it and I hope he gets to see another good game like the last two and a positive result for Oxford.”

Big brother Olly said “We are really looking forward to this. Our upbringing was just playing football together since an early age, so we are used to each other's game. It will be a nice day for the family, it's just a shame they can't all be there.

“We have never come close to playing each other, I don't think we have even been in the same league very often. It's nice to get this opportunity, and I want him to do well, but I want us to come out with three points.”
