PREVIEW Oxford United v AFC Wimbledon

A full guide to Saturday's season opener at the Kassam Stadium

4 September 2020

Oxford United kick off their new season with a home game against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday in the Carabao Cup (3pm)

TEAM NEWS
United are without two of their new signings. Sean Clare is suspended after a sending off in the Scottish Cup last season while winger Joel Cooper is away with Northern Ireland. The only player missing through injury is Jamie Hanson who is likely to be out for three or four weeks with a calf strain, but that leaves Karl Robinson with plenty of options for his first competitive line up of the season.

The U's are likely to give everyone a chance to shine this week with Saturday's game followed swiftly by a home game against Chelsea U21 in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday.

Rob Atkinson stands by for his debut. Hear from him, Karl and Simon Eastwood in iFollow right now.

THE OPPOSITION
Assistant Manager Nick Daws believes the Dons are ready for the new season although games against the U's hold mixed memories:

“We were really pleased with the first Oxford game last season, but away from home we had a slight tweak in the team that didn’t quite work out, and they were firing on all cylinders" he told the official Wimbledon website. "They were a very good side that night on full throttle, but we were still disappointed to lose the game the way we did. It was the only game in my time as part of the management team that we were really disappointed with. Hopefully there won’t be an instance of that again, but we respect Oxford and the way that they play.

"I think we are better equipped this season to deal with different opposition, different formations, different styles of play, and we will have the mentality to go away from home with the confidence to win."

The Dons are without Jack Rudoni (concussion) and Jaakko Oksanen who is on international duty with Finland U-21s
