Beano dedicates his hundredth to the Supporters
There was only one man making the headlines on Saturday as James Constable bagged his 100th goal for the club. Typically, James was quick to dedicate the goal to the fans who love the striker for his obvious passion for Oxford United.
“I had a couple of chances against Bristol Rovers to get the goal at home and I would have loved to do that for the fans, but it is just one of those things” James told Yellow Player. “I have done it now and would love to go on and get the record this season. The fans have been brilliant and one of the main reasons I have loved being at this football club. I have enjoyed every minute and scoring goals is a massive part of my game and what I enjoy doing. The fans have been great with me and that goal is for them.”
James is now just seven goals behind record scorer Graham Atkinson and as his goal crossed the line at Field Mill his thoughts swiftly turned to chasing down that 107 goal target:
“It did cross my mind and straight away I knew that we were playing against ten men and they would tire and there might be the opportunity for one or two more goals, but in the end we were just pleased to get all three points again. I didn’t hit it that well actually but I kept watching it and it took ages to actually cross the line. I was very relieved when it went in, especially in front of the Oxford fans at that end.”
The goal capped off another fabulous away performance as United went back to the top of the table.
“I thought we played some really good stuff” James said. “We could have maybe made it a bit more comfortable for ourselves but it was good to get the win. Now we go in to the Gateshead game full of confidence
“The club is on an improving slope and every goal we score just keeps us moving in the right direction. If we keep this little run going then hopefully it will be a successful season.”
