Duo arrive at the U's
Oxford United are pleased to announce the signings of Tom Newey and Asa Hall as the squad continues to take shape ahead of the first pre-season game.
Newey, 30, is a vastly experienced left-back who has made over 400 appearances since serving his apprenticeship at Leeds United. After signing for first Leyton Orient and then Cambridge United he made over 150 appearances for Grimsby Town before joining Bury in 2009. He made 53 appearances at Rotherham United between 2010 and 2012 before joining Scunthorpe United last summer and making 49 appearances for the Iron in League One. He joins on a one year deal.
Asa Hall will need little introduction to United fans after making 82 appearances for the U’s between 2010 and 2012 after signing from Luton Town. Tall and athletic, Asa scored eleven times for the U’s in that period before moving to Shrewsbury Town last summer. He ended the season on loan at Aldershot, playing against United in the Shots 3-2 win, and joins United on a six month loan.
Manager Chris Wilder said:
"They are both very experienced, solid players and they add a bit of depth. They both came to the Marine Camp training base over the weekend and fitted straight in to the strong team ethic that this group have already developed.
"Tom adds balance on the left side of defence and is a very good organiser as well as a good player. Asa showed us towards the end of his first spell here what a good player he can be at this level. He scores his fair share of goals, works hard for the team and can play all across the midfield. If he can perform as consistently over the next six months as he did at the end of his first spell here then he will certainly add to the squad."
The pair join David Hunt, Jon Meades, Danny Rose, Josh Shama and Dave Kitson among the new faces at the Kassam Stadium as the squad prepare for their first pre-season game at Ardley on Saturday.
