4 June 2021

Oxford United Women celebrated their season last weekend with an awards evening which announced the Players’ Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, Goal of the Year and Supporters’ Player of the Year.

United’s RTC graduate Carly Johns swept up two of the awards, being voted by her teammates as Players’ Player of the Year, as well as being awarded Goal of the Year by the fans for her spectacular effort against Wimbledon.

“At the start of the season, I set myself the aim just to improve both physically and technically, and I think that I have come a long way,” Carly said. “I’m so thankful to be voted by my teammates as Player of the Year. I was surprised to hear that I’d won Goal of the Year as well, so I’m just so grateful to have won both awards.“

“For that goal against Wimbledon, I decided to get myself into the box and as the ball came in, I knew there was a couple of players around me so I couldn’t really control it on the ground. But it just popped up perfectly I went for the bicycle kick and to my surprise it went in!”

Next up was Young Player of the Season, won by midfielder Georgia Brown who said

“I’ve actually achieved more than what I expected this season! Thanks to all of the support from the staff and players, they’ve helped me so much throughout the season and there’s so many talented young players which have had a big impact this season, so I was quite surprised to win the award to be honest.

Lauren Haynes also claimed the Supporters’ Player of the Year, sponsored by the Tite Inn, a few weeks ago, and The U’s captain reflected on her team’s season:

“We were fortunate to have fans in the stadium during our league campaign, and we were also able to livestream our FA Cup games, so to be voted by the people who have watched us this season as Player of the Year is an honour.

“To also be able to play every game of the season league season has been fantastic.”
