 Chelsea win 4-3 on penalties

Oxford United Women were eliminated from the FA WNL Cup after an agonising 4-3 defeat on penalties to Chelsea PGA.

The match went straight to penalties at the end of 90 minutes with the score level at 1-1. Carla Gardiner opened the scoring for the visitors before Oxford captain Jenna Legg tied the game.

U’s manager Liam Gilbert made three changes from the side that drew with Real Bedford in midweek with Shelly Provan, Ellie-Mae Richardson and Emma Thompson coming into the side for Nicola Gibson, Riva Casley and Grace Palmer.

As it was Oxford’s last home game before Remembrance Day, a moment of silence was observed before kick-off to remember those who served and sacrificed in the armed forces.

Chelsea started the game on top and in the opening minutes a corner into the U’s box caused a goal-line scramble, with the Yellows somehow keeping the ball out with crucial blocks and fine close-range saves from Beth Wookey.

United started the game defending resolutely but struggling to maintain attacks at the other end of the pitch, with their main highlight in the first ten minutes being captain Legg’s excellent sweeping pass across field to Sophie Quirk who won a corner.

As the opening quarter continued Chelsea began to look more threatening, trying to force their way through a resilient U’s defence who were offering them very few clear chances at goal.

As the game reached the 26th minute, Oxford created their first big chance of the game as Holly Manders played a dangerous ball into the box from the left, needing a crucial interception from the visitors to deny Thompson who was racing to the ball.

The away side opened the scoring only a minute later as they quickly moved up the pitch with their attack ending with Chelsea striker Carla Gardiner shooting from the edge of the box. The ball took a wicked deflection off a United defender as it looped into the net past a helpless and wrong-footed Wookey.

In the minutes following the goal, the Yellows looked for an instant response as they piled pressure on the away side's goal. Quirk was at the centre of the attacks as she put in multiple dangerous crosses which the visitors scrambled to clear, before her vicious long-range effort was tipped over the bar by the Chelsea goalkeeper.

In the 36th minute, Liam Gilbert made his first substitution of the afternoon as Ruby Sealey was replaced by Gibson in a change that moved Maisy Barker into an attacking position.

As the half came to a close, the U’s finally got a well-deserved equaliser as Legg intercepted the ball high up the pitch after an intense high press from Oxford, before breaking into the box and sliding a beautiful finish into the bottom left-hand corner of the net. Soon after, the referee blew the half-time whistle with the sides level and the game on a knife-edge.

The opening fifteen minutes of the second half was a competitive fight with both sides trying to edge in front, however both teams were defending well and not offering each other clear chances at goal.

In the 61st minute, the U’s looked to their bench again as Provan was replaced by Casley. After the change, the Yellows began to create better chances as Manders struck a long-range effort against the bar, before her corner, only moments later, found Casley at the back post who headed over.

In the 73rd minute United made another change with Legg, who put in an impressive performance in midfield, being replaced by Palmer. Moments later the best chance of the second half fell to an unmarked Quirk who fired over from close range after the ball broke to her in the box following an Oxford attack.

As the game entered the final ten minutes, both sides battled for a winner, however the sides couldn’t be separated. The referee blew the full-time whistle to confirm a penalty shootout to decide the tie.

Both sides’ first two penalties of the shootout were converted, and Palmer stepped up to make it three from three for the U’s. Chelsea then missed the target with their third penalty, but they scored their next two whilst the Yellows failed to convert either of theirs, confirming the away side as winners on penalties to progress to the next round.

Disappointment in the Cup, but next up is a chance to bounce back with a return to league action. Oxford United will make the trip to the south coast to face Portsmouth in a top of the table clash on Sunday 8 November.
