Three late goals from Siriki Dembele, Louie Sibley and Gatlin O’Donkor saw Oxford United secure their first home win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Burton Albion.
The Yellows followed up last weekend’s impressive win away at Leicester City with another strong performance, making it back-to-back victories without conceding a goal. The result lifts United into fifth place in the League One table.
Following the win at Leicester, Aaron Ramsey named an unchanged starting XI, with Kai Andrews making his first home start for the Club.
Oxford started brightly, with Mo Missanga showing the same strength and determination that saw him score last weekend. The winger raced down the right in the opening minute as United looked to make an early impact.
With 333 travelling Burton supporters in attendance, the visitors were able to make their voices heard during the opening stages. However, the first half proved to be a cagey affair, with both sides struggling to retain possession and neither able to register a shot during the opening half-hour.
Burton eventually created the first real opening on 31 minutes after winning possession from an Oxford throw-in. Simon Eastwood was forced into action, producing an excellent low save to deny Collar and keep the scores level. Strong defending from the Yellows ensured the danger was quickly cleared.
Eastwood was called upon again just eight minutes later. Quick off his line, the Oxford goalkeeper confidently claimed the ball inside the box ahead of the onrushing Burton attackers.
The visitors started the second half on the front foot, enjoying periods of possession and pressure. However, Oxford’s defence stood firm, frustrating Burton and preventing them from turning their pressure into clear-cut opportunities.
As the half progressed, United began to grow into the game. The link-up play between Missanga and Peter Kioso down the right caused Burton problems, with the Yellows increasingly finding space as the game opened up.
And when their chances came, Oxford were clinical. In the 76th minute, substitute Tyler Goodrham produced a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Missanga. The winger raced towards the byline before delivering an excellent cross into the heart of the Burton box. Dembele met it perfectly, firing the ball into the back of the net to give United a deserved 1-0 lead.
The goal sparked Oxford into life, and the Yellows continued to push forward as they looked to put the game beyond doubt.
Their pressure was rewarded again when substitute Sibley found space on the edge of the Burton penalty area. The midfielder unleashed a powerful low effort across the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner to double United’s advantage.
With Burton searching for a way back into the game, Oxford continued to defend resolutely and look dangerous on the counter. Another strong defensive header from Michal Helik helped launch United forward once again.
Cameron Brannagan eventually found Sibley, who showed excellent composure before lifting the ball into the path of Gatlin O’Donkor. The striker made no mistake, firing home with virtually the final kick of the game to seal a memorable 3-0 victory.
The late flurry completed an impressive afternoon for the Yellows, who have now won their last two matches, scoring seven goals and conceding none.
With their first home victory of the season secured, United head into their next fixture sitting fifth in the League One table.
