Oxford United and Barnsley both finished with 10 men as the sides played out an entertaining 1-1 draw at Oakwell.

An early red card for the hosts was followed by a late dismissal for Jamie Cumming, but United were by far the more threatening side throughout and will feel they did enough to take all three points.

Mark Harris scored his second-half equaliser after the Yellows fell behind before the break, but despite registering 10 shots on target and dominating large spells of the game, United couldn't find a winner to secure back-to-back victories.

The game’s first major talking point came inside 10 minutes when Barnsley were reduced to 10 men. Jack Shepherd was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Louie Sibley, although fortunately the United midfielder was able to continue.

The dismissal sparked United into life as they looked to make their numerical advantage count. They went close for the first time on 14 minutes, with Cieran Slicker and some determined defensive blocking keeping out efforts from Tyler Goodrham and Siriki Dembélé in quick succession.

Harris, fresh from scoring the winner on Tuesday night, tested Slicker again on 23 minutes. The striker's effort from 25 yards looked destined for the bottom corner, but the Barnsley goalkeeper produced a fine save to turn it around the post.

Despite being down to 10 men, the hosts showed they still posed a threat. Their first real opportunity came a minute later when Cameron McGeehan's effort looked to be heading towards goal, only for Michal Helik to clear off the line after United had given the ball away inside their own box.

It proved to be a warning United failed to heed. On 32 minutes, Barnsley took the lead against the run of play. Reyes Cleary capitalised on a turnover in possession and drove forward before the ball was switched into space on the right. With Jack Currie caught out of position, a first-time delivery across the box found Vimal Yoganathan, who finished past Jamie Cumming.

United were not quite at their fluent best but finished the half on the front foot, applying pressure in search of an equaliser. There were strong appeals for a penalty after Harris appeared to be pulled back inside the area, but the referee waved play on, and the Yellows went into the break trailing.

Aaron Ramsey made two changes at half-time, introducing Peter Kioso and Aidomo Emakhu in place of Brodie Spencer and Luka Lynch.

The substitutes made an immediate impact, linking up well inside the opening five minutes to create two excellent opportunities. The best fell to Kioso, whose effort from the rebound of Slicker's save from Emakhu looked to be heading into the net before a Barnsley defender produced a goal-line clearance.

United continued to turn up the pressure and Goodrham came agonisingly close to drawing them level three minutes later. His powerful effort from 25 yards rattled the crossbar, with Slicker possibly getting a fingertip to the ball.

Currie was next to threaten, driving a shot from the left corner of the penalty area which took a significant deflection. Slicker did well to react and push the ball behind for a corner.

The equaliser United deserved finally arrived, with Harris once again finding the net to claim his sixth goal of the season.

Sam Long was the architect, playing a perfectly weighted ball beyond the Barnsley left-back for Emakhu to chase. The winger showed excellent footwork to beat his man before cutting the ball back for Harris, who calmly passed it home.

The turnaround almost followed on 64 minutes. This time Emakhu took aim from a tight angle, but Slicker produced an excellent save to turn his effort over the bar.

United continued to dominate and another substitute almost made the difference late on. Gatlin O'Donkor rose to meet a cross on 82 minutes, sending a looping header over the goalkeeper but narrowly the wrong side of the crossbar.

Barnsley, despite looking increasingly tired, still had one big opportunity of their own. A minute later, Cumming produced a stunning save to keep out Brownlie's fierce strike from 20 yards.

There was further drama with just two minutes remaining when Cumming was shown a straight red card. The goalkeeper raced out towards the left wing to challenge Brownlie and, despite appearing to get a touch on the ball, the referee deemed the challenge worthy of a dismissal.

United were unable to find the late winner their second-half performance deserved and had to settle for a point.

The unbeaten run continues, but the Yellows will feel there was more on offer after such a dominant display. Attention now turns to Wednesday night and a huge game back at the Kassam Stadium.
