Oxford United… 0

Oxford United ended their two-year Championship stay with a 2-0 defeat away to Millwall at The Den.

Two goals from Femi Azeez either side of half-time earned the home side the win, as a sold-out away end stayed until the end to show their appreciation to the team.

United started the game well against a Millwall side who knew a victory could earn them promotion, if Ipswich Town dropped points at home to QPR. Will Lankshear, in his final game for the Club, went close on the 11th minute after turning a cross from Stan Mills narrowly over the bar.

Millwall’s first chance came 11 minutes later from left-back Zak Sturge, who hammered a close-range shot on goal but Brodie Spencer got his body in the way to turn it over the bar.

The Lions were turning up the pressure, but it was Oxford who went close next, this time Mills set up Cameron Brannagan on the edge of the box and his shot was blocked before it could reach the goal.

On the 34th minute it was 1-0 to Millwall. Hitting United on the break, Azeez picked the ball up from Mihailo Ivanovic before getting it onto his right foot and hammering into he roof of the net.

Into the second period and after three minutes it was 2-0. Azeez was the at the double, as he tapped in at the back post from a dangerous cross which was played across goal.

United had a late flurry as they tried to get back into it. First, Jeon Jin Woo dragged a shot wide from 16 yards out, then on the 83rd minute, Mark Harris had a header at the back post which was saved onto the post by the keeper and just stayed out.

It’s been a rollercoaster ride for United in the Championship with some incredible moments along the way, with full focus now on returning as quickly as possible and seeing the Yellows back in the second tier.
