Oxford United… 2

Oxford United maintained their unbeaten home record this season as second-half goals from substitutes Gatlin O’Donkor and Mo Missanga secured a memorable Thames Valley derby victory for the Yellows.
For the first time at home since 1998, Oxford United claimed victory in this fixture, climbing to third in the league table in the process.
Aaron Ramsey made five changes to his starting line-up following the 1–1 draw against Barnsley at the weekend. Simon Eastwood, Ciaron Brown, Cameron Brannagan, Aidomo Emakhu and Peter Kioso all came into the side for Wednesday night's cold encounter at the Kassam Stadium.
Before kick-off, both teams, coaching staff and supporters stood together in unity for a Remembrance Day service, honouring those who had lost their lives serving in wars and conflicts.
Following the teams' walkouts, the club managers joined representatives from the armed forces for a wreath-laying ceremony to pay their respects. Both sides also wore special poppy editions on their shirts to commemorate the occasion.
The Thames Valley derby began with all the intensity expected of such a fixture. The opening minutes were largely contested in midfield, with both sides struggling to create meaningful opportunities. It quickly became clear that this would be a closely fought encounter.
Reading registered the first clear chance of the game when a cross from the right-hand side flashed across the face of Simon Eastwood's goal. However, Michal Helik did just enough to keep Daniel Kywerewaa at bay.
United responded quickly, with Siriki Dembélé carrying the ball forward down the left before delivering a cross into the six-yard box. Unfortunately for the Yellows, the delivery was comfortably collected by the Reading goalkeeper.
Oxford have enjoyed considerable success attacking down the wings this season, and Wednesday night was no exception. Both Aidomo Emakhu and Dembélé looked to make dangerous runs down the flanks, but Reading's well-organised defensive line repeatedly brought their attacks to an end.
A physical challenge on the edge of the Oxford penalty area resulted in a free kick for Reading. Lewis Wing delivered the ball into the box, but Oxford's defensive wall dealt with the danger comfortably.
Neither side was given time to settle, with every attacking move seemingly followed by a counterattack from the opposition.
The Yellows began to grow into the game and, during another attacking spell, the ball fell to Cameron Brannagan in the centre of the pitch. Encouraged by supporters in the East Stand, Brannagan attempted a shot from outside the penalty area. However, his effort carried too much power and failed to dip in time to trouble Joel Pereira in the Reading goal.
Oxford's best opportunity of the first half came following an impressive run from Dembélé down the left wing. He delivered the ball across to Emakhu, who was making his way into the penalty area. However, a heavy first touch took the ball away from the forward, allowing Pereira to gather it just in time.
Reading were awarded the first corner of the match on the left-hand side of Eastwood's goal. Wing delivered the set-piece, which initially found a Reading player, but the opportunity came to nothing after a foul was committed on Helik.
At the other end, following Reading's corner, Emakhu found himself with space down the wing and drove forward before slipping the ball into the penalty area towards an arriving Mark Harris. Harris sprinted into the box to meet the delivery, but Pereira got there first to prevent Oxford from taking the lead.
The final ten minutes of the half continued in the same end-to-end fashion. Peter Kioso became the first player to receive a booking following a challenge, before Reading's Joshua Stokes quickly followed him into the referee's notebook.
Despite opportunities at both ends, neither team could find the breakthrough before the interval.
Oxford went into half-time with 72% possession, highlighting their control of the ball, although the score remained goalless with everything still to play for.
Reading emerged from the interval with renewed intensity and immediately put the Oxford defence under pressure. The visitors struck the woodwork three times during the second half but were unable to convert their opportunities.
Their best chance came around the 65-minute mark when the ball was delivered into the Oxford penalty area. A scramble followed inside the six-yard box, but Ciaron Brown did brilliantly to keep the ball out of the net, turning it around the post for a Reading corner.
The resulting corner found Jack Marriott, whose glancing header sailed over the crossbar.
After weathering Reading's spell of pressure, Oxford began to find their way back into the game. Emakhu found himself with space to run towards the Reading defence, but with little support arriving further up the pitch, the visitors were able to clear the danger before he could create a clear shooting opportunity.
The Yellows were then awarded three free kicks in quick succession. Tyler Goodrham delivered one into the penalty area, but Reading managed to clear their lines. The ball fell to Brannagan, who fired an effort towards goal but failed to seriously test Pereira.
Oxford continued to push forward with greater intensity and determination, showing their desire to secure all three points.
Aaron Ramsey made his first change by introducing Mo Missanga in place of Emakhu, bringing fresh energy and pace to the right-hand side of Oxford's attack.
Helik had endured a demanding evening in the United defence and was subsequently replaced by Sam Long. During the same period, Goodrham made way for Gatlin O'Donkor.
The substitutions immediately injected fresh energy into the Oxford side, with improved link-up play between midfield and attack beginning to cause Reading problems.
Their persistence was soon rewarded.
The Yellows were awarded another free kick on the edge of the penalty area. Brannagan took it quickly, slipping the ball across to O'Donkor, who struck a superb effort into the far corner to put Oxford ahead.
The Kassam Stadium erupted as the substitute celebrated giving the home side a crucial advantage in the derby.
Reading struggled to respond to the increased intensity brought by Oxford's substitutes and were forced to work hard to contain the Yellows' continued attacking threat.
Another sustained Oxford attack resulted in a corner, which Brannagan delivered into the penalty area. Reading failed to clear their lines convincingly, allowing the ball to fall to O'Donkor.
Showing excellent awareness, O'Donkor played the ball into Mo Missanga, who calmly guided it into the back of the net to double Oxford's advantage.
The homegrown midfielder raced towards the supporters to celebrate as his name echoed around the Kassam Stadium.
With two substitutes now on the scoresheet, Oxford had taken complete control of the contest.
The pattern continued throughout the closing stages, with Oxford maintaining their attacking threat while Reading desperately searched for a way back into the match.
The visitors were chasing a two-goal deficit but struggled to create any meaningful opportunities following Oxford's opener in the 71st minute.
Reading pushed their outfield players forward during the final ten minutes in an attempt to rescue something from the game. However, they were unable to break through an Oxford defensive line that had produced an excellent second-half performance.
Missanga had the final shot of the match for the Yellows, sending an effort straight into the gloves of Pereira.
Moments later, the referee's final whistle confirmed a memorable 2–0 victory for Oxford United.
The Yellows had kept Reading at bay, with Simon Eastwood securing a clean sheet and second-half substitutes O'Donkor and Missanga providing the decisive goals in front of the home supporters.
It was a deserved derby victory, another unbeaten home performance and a special night at the Kassam Stadium, as Oxford United climbed to third in the table.
