Sheffield Wednesday… 1

Oxford United’s stay in the Championship was brought to an end, despite an impressive 4-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the final home game of the season.

Results earlier in the day brought United’s two year stay in the Championship to a close, but the team stepped up and delivered one of the performances of the season.

It all started after just five minutes, with Will Lankshear grabbing his first of the season. Stan Mills was the architect, picking out Lankshear in the middle of the box and with the ball just behind him, he expertly backheeled it through the keeper’s legs and into the net.

It was almost 2-0 just 10 minutes later with Brodie Spencer getting close to his second of the season. Michal Helik headed the ball back across goal for the full-back and his volley just yards out was blocked before it could reach the empty net.

It would end up 2-0 on the 27th minute, and what a goal it was. It was Lankshear again, this time picking the ball up deep outside the box and curling a stunning effort into the top right corner, for what is likely to be his best goal in a yellow shirt.

United kept coming forward, but it was Wednesday who almost got a goal back just before the break, Jerry Yates striking the post.

Right on half-time, Lankshear was inches away from his first senior hattrick. Played through on goal, his angle was tight, but his shot was nestling for the bottom right corner, but for the hand of the keeper.

Into the second period and United made it 3-0 through Will Vaulks, who powered a stunning left-foot volley into the top right corner on the 67th minute.

Wednesday did pull a goal back, before Myles Peart Harris added United’s fourth, getting onto Lankshear’s cutback and calmly slotting into the bottom left corner.

It was an incredible moment at the final whistle as the supporters stayed behind to show their appreciation to the squad, and the squad showed their thanks in return.

Despite relegation, this Club has stood together at every point, and will return as one next season.
