Oxford United produced a stunning display to defeat promotion-chasing Ipswich Town 2-1 at home.
A first goal of the season from Mark Harris gave United the lead, but after Leif Davis equalised it set up Przemyslaw Placheta to grab a late winner to seal a huge three points.
Ipswich Town came into the game fifth in the Championship table, with plenty of talent throughout the team having recently dropped down from the Premier League.
It was set to be a big test for United, who have performed well against the teams at the top of the division over the calendar year.
There were a few moments of caution in the opening 20 minutes for United to contend with. Both chances came for Sindre Egeli, firstly curling a left footed shot inches wide from 12 yards out, then seeing a header expertly saved by Jamie Cumming.
Ipswich were made to pay moments later, as Mark Harris grabbed his first goal of the season on 24 minutes to put United into the lead.
A mistake from the Ipswich Town midfield gifted the ball to the Wales international on the edge of the box. His first time shot was well saved, but it broke back to Harris who produced a tidy finish with his left foot to send the Kassam wild.
Harris had his confidence up and four minutes later he almost produced the goal of the season. Seeing the goalkeeper off his line, Harris tried his luck from the halfway line, which Christian Walton had to backpedal and save.
Ipswich came back into the game and George Hirst had a good chance on the half hour mark, nipping in to meet a cross at the front post and just flicking the ball wide.
The final chance of the half fell to United and Stan Mills. Cutting in from the right with seconds to spare, his left foot shot made Walton work, the keeper having to dive down to his right to stop the Yellows going 2-0 up at half time.
Eight minutes in the second period and the sucker punch arrived, as Leif Davis grabbed a spectacular equaliser. A corner from the right was curled out to the edge of the box for the left back, who hit a side foot volley flush into the back of the net.
The visitor’s tails were up and Jaden Philogene made Jamie Cumming produce a diving save just two minutes later to stop a quick turnaround. The pressure was mounting and Cumming had to stand strong on 58 minutes to prevent Hirst, putting his face in between ball and goal to keep out his close-range effort.
On came the substitutes for United with Placheta coming off the bench and he brought the killer touch. With 13 minutes to go, Brian De Keersmaecker found Placheta racing down the right wing. His first touch was outstanding to take him away from the defender and with his second he slotted beyond the keeper into the bottom right corner.
United continued to push for another goal, with Ole Romeny going close with a cracking shot from the edge of the box which just whistled wide.
With Ipswich pushing for a leveller, United held on, with Cumming making another strong save towards the end.
A huge three points for United. Next up, Swansea City away next Saturday.
