(Harris 8’ & 60, MIssanga 57’, McDonnell 77’)
Oxford United produced a scintillating performance to beat Leicester City 4-0 at the King Power Stadium.
Two goals from Mark Harris, alongside first goals for the Club from Mo Missanga and Jamie McDonnell, rounded off an incredible team performance as United dominated the home side both in and out of possession.
More than 2,000 travelling United supporters packed into the corner of the King Power Stadium and enjoyed an afternoon that will live long in the memory, as the players delivered their finest performances of the season.
There are still so many games to come in this long campaign, but this was a performance and a result that everyone in Yellow can savour.
United already had good recent memories at the King Power Stadium following last season’s 2-1 victory, when goals from Sam Long and Mark Harris secured all three points.
Looking to create another memorable afternoon, Aaron Ramsey made three changes to the side that suffered defeat against Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night, with Kai Andrews, Peter Kioso and Michal Helik coming into the starting XI.
From the first whistle, United showed their intent. Playing with aggression, intensity and purpose, they immediately put Leicester under pressure.
And after just eight minutes, that early pressure paid off.
A stunning move beginning inside United’s own half created the opening goal. Jamie McDonnell found Mo Missanga in space down the right, and his delivery was perfect for Harris, who bundled the ball home to give United an early lead.
United were playing with confidence and belief, although they remained mindful of the threat posed by the hosts.
On 13 minutes, Simon Eastwood was called into action for the first time, producing a smart save to turn Emil Riis’ header around the post.
Eight minutes later, the experienced goalkeeper was called upon again, making a quickfire double save to deny right-back Jayden Joseph, whose two efforts on target looked destined for the back of the net.
United may not have had a huge number of shots on target to show for their dominance, but they continued to find dangerous positions. Dembele and Missanga were causing problems on either flank, repeatedly delivering threatening balls into the Leicester penalty area.
By half-time, United were firmly in control following a dominant opening 45 minutes.
Straight from the restart, they came within inches of doubling their advantage. Dembele played Andrews through on goal, only for a last-ditch challenge from a Leicester defender to prevent what looked certain to be a second.
But United would not have to wait much longer. On 57 minutes, 18-year-old Youth Academy graduate Mo Missanga capped another outstanding performance with a goal of pure class.
Andrews broke free down the left before finding Missanga in the box. Under pressure, the youngster showed remarkable composure, stopping and controlling the ball before curling a superb finish into the bottom-right corner.
Three minutes later, it was 3-0. Dembele was again at the heart of the move, scooping the ball into the path of Andrews, who in turn found Harris. The striker made no mistake, curling a beautiful left-footed effort into the bottom-left corner to claim his second of the afternoon.
United were rampant, creating chance after chance and looking increasingly likely to add to their advantage.
And on 77 minutes, they did just that. Substitute and debutant Luka Lunch showcased his pace down the right before sending the ball across the box. McDonnell arrived at the perfect moment to tuck the ball home and celebrate his first goal for the Club.
The final 10 minutes saw Leicester push forward in search of at least a consolation, but United continued to fight and harry the hosts right until the final whistle. Nothing was getting past Eastwood.
A 4-0 victory at the King Power Stadium was secured, and with it came one of Oxford United’s most impressive performances in recent memory.
There is still a long way to go, with plenty of hard work ahead, but for now, this was a Saturday afternoon for everyone in Yellow to enjoy.
