Oxford United… 0

Swansea City… 1

(Vipotnik 14’)

Oxford United lost 1-0 at home to Swansea City after a first half header from Zan Vipotnik.

Craig Short named the same side which defeated Southampton 2-1 on Boxing Day, which saw Nik Prelec leading the line and goalscorers Stan Mills and Tyler Goodrham in again.

It was a bright opening 10 minutes for United without carving any real opportunities of note.

However, on 14 minutes, Swansea took the lead through striker Zan Vipotnik. After defending a first phase freekick well, the ball was swung in again by Josh Tymon for the unmarked Slovenian to head past Jamie Cumming.

What followed was a spell of Swansea pressure, with Jamie Cumming having to make two good stops over the following 15 minutes to ensure the score remained 1-0.

Oxford began to push back into the game, with Brian De Keersmaecker, Tyler Goodrham and Stan Mills all trying their luck from range, but either blazing over the bar or shooting straight at the keeper.

Into the second half and United had to come out and search for a way back into the game, but it was the visitors who had a few near opportunities in the opening 10 minutes.

Short looked to the bench for changes and brought on three players to bring the attacking impetus which was missing.

It was Stan Mills who did have United’s best chance on 66 minutes when we managed to race in behind and on goal, but his touch just let him down and Swansea managed to clear.

De Keersmaecker had half of the Kassam celebrating on 76 minutes with a freekick from 25 yards, which looked to nestle in the top corner, but it hit the outside netting and saved Swansea.

United failed to push and make any real pressure in the final 15 minutes, and with that, the result was secured for Swansea City.

It’s another quick turnaround with Ipswich Town up next on New Year’s Day.
