Oxford United… 0

Wrexham… 1

(Windass 40’)

Oxford United fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Wrexham after a first half goal from Josh Windass.

United had an early chance inside the opening five minutes, with a Sam Long cross finding the head of Will Lankshear six yards out and his header went straight at Danny Ward.

Wrexham did go close to taking the lead on 14 minutes, when Sam Smith met a dangerous cross from the left and just steered the ball wide of the post with Jamie Cumming committing himself and out of his goal.

Josh Windass whistled a shot wide from 25 yards on the 31st minute, but he would put Wrexham into the lead nine minutes later. Getting onto a knock-down by Smith, Windass lashed a right-footed effort low into the bottom left corner from outside the area.

Into the second half and Matt Bloomfield turned to his bench to try and find a spark to get back into the game. Michal Helik did have a powerful header saved near the hour mark, but it was Dominic Hyam on 61 minutes who forced Cumming into a strong reactive save with the first big chance of the half.

Mark Harris came off the bench and whizzed a shot wide with around 20 minutes to play – the first big real chance for United in the half.

Aidomo Emakhu was a very bright spark on the left, creating plenty of openings and opportunities for the Yellows, and he did have one big chance towards the end of the game, which came and went.

Despite having more than 10 shots in the second period, United couldn’t find the back of the net.

A defeat which leaves it all to do for United, with two huge games coming up, starting on Saturday at home to Sheffield Wednesday.
