One Call Stadium, Mansfield
Mansfield Town… 1
(Smith 82’)
Oxford United… 1
(Lynch 34’)
Nine-man Oxford United battled to a hard-earned point away at Mansfield Town after a brave and determined performance from the entire team in testing conditions.
Luka Lynch’s first goal in professional football gave United the lead in the first half, but just as they looked to be heading towards all three points, a controversial second yellow card for Peter Kioso changed the course of the game.
Mansfield equalised with eight minutes remaining before Gatlin O’Donkor was also shown a second yellow card, reducing United to nine men. With seven minutes of stoppage time to negotiate, the U’s were forced to dig deep, even playing with eight men for a period after Brodie Spencer was made to leave the pitch for more than a minute during injury time.
Every Oxford player put everything on the line to secure a point, producing a performance full of determination and resilience to head back home with something to show for their efforts.
Oxford United arrived at the One Call Stadium on the back of an impressive 2-1 away victory over Notts County on Saturday, but knew they faced a Mansfield side with a formidable home record.
Aaron Ramsey made three changes from that victory, with Lynch coming in for his first league start since signing on loan from Aston Villa.
The hosts were also coming into the game on the back of a 2-1 win and made a strong start, almost taking the lead inside two minutes. A ball across the box from the left found Deji Oshilaja in space on the right, but his shot was blocked by a teammate before it could reach the goal.
United had a big chance of their own a few minutes later when Louie Sibley’s delivery from a wide free-kick was flicked on by Mark Harris, only for the ball to drift narrowly wide.
Mansfield were on top for much of the first half and continued to create opportunities. Rhys Oates tried an audacious backheel in the 19th minute, but Jamie Cumming reacted well to turn it wide. Ten minutes later, the Oxford goalkeeper was called into action again, keeping out a first-time effort from Jon Russell inside the box.
Despite the pressure, it was Oxford who took the lead in spectacular fashion. Cutting in from the right wing, 19-year-old Lynch curled a stunning effort into the top-left corner, leaving the diving goalkeeper with no chance. It was the first goal of Lynch’s professional career and a moment of real quality that gave United a crucial advantage.
Mansfield continued to push for an equaliser before the break and should have drawn level in the 40th minute. Oxford gave the ball away from their own goal kick, allowing Michael Smith to race through on goal. Cumming produced a smart save, but the rebound fell to Russell, who blazed his effort over the bar with the Oxford goalkeeper still on the floor.
United reached half-time with their lead intact, giving Ramsey’s side an opportunity to regroup and look to gain greater control in the second half.
The opening 15 minutes of the second period saw both sides enjoy spells of pressure without seriously troubling the respective goalkeepers. On the hour mark, United turned to the bench, introducing Mo Missanga and O’Donkor, with goalscorer Lynch making way.
The substitutes combined seven minutes later to create Oxford’s biggest chance of the game and a golden opportunity to double their lead. Missanga drove forward from the right before finding O’Donkor with a perfectly weighted pass, but the striker could not beat the goalkeeper, who rushed off his line to make the stop.
Then came the turning point, with 15 minutes remaining. Kioso raced into the box and went down following contact from a Mansfield defender, with United appearing poised to win a penalty. However, the referee judged that the right-back had dived and showed him a second yellow card, reducing Oxford to 10 men.
Seven minutes later, Mansfield capitalised. A testing ball into the box was not dealt with by the United defence, and the ball bounced off Smith and into the net to bring the hosts level with eight minutes remaining.
Just two minutes later, Oxford were reduced to nine men when O’Donkor was shown a second yellow card. Having received a questionable first booking for moving the ball away, the striker was then cautioned for a challenge on the edge of the U’s box.
With Mansfield piling on the pressure, Ramsey’s side faced a daunting task to hold on to their point. But the Oxford players showed immense character, throwing themselves into challenges, winning headers, making clearances and defending their goal with everything they had.
The closing stages became a test of sheer resilience, with United briefly forced to play with just eight men after Spencer was required to leave the pitch during stoppage time. Despite the added adversity, the U’s stood firm to secure a hard-earned point.
It was a hugely creditable performance from Oxford, whose players fought for every ball and showed tremendous togetherness in the face of difficult circumstances. The travelling supporters also deserve great credit for making the journey north on a Thursday night and continuing to back the team throughout.
