Mick Brown Retires After 44 Years At The Club

After 44 remarkable years at Oxford United Football Club, Mick Brown will retire at the end of this season.

A lifelong supporter, Mick’s journey began in 1977 when he founded the London Road Club, organising coach travel for fellow fans attending away fixtures. His passion and commitment led him to officially join the Club in 1982, the beginning of more than four decades of dedicated service.

Mick quickly became a familiar and trusted figure at the Manor Ground during one of the most exciting periods in Oxford United’s history, as the Club climbed through the divisions to reach the top tier of English football, along with Milk Cup success.

Over the years, Mick has fulfilled almost every role imaginable - from running the Ticket Office to editing the matchday programme, showcasing his versatility and willingness to support where needed. In 1989, he was appointed Club Secretary, a role he carried out with distinction for many years before moving into his current position as Assistant Club Secretary in 2023.

Throughout his time at Oxford United, Mick has experienced it all. From unforgettable highs to the most challenging moments. His loyalty was perhaps most evident during the financial difficulties of the 1990s, when the U’s faced an uncertain future. As part of a committed group, Mick played a vital role in helping to bring stability, laying the foundations for the Football Club we know today.

In more recent years, Mick has remained a central figure behind the scenes, contributing to the Club’s resurgence and progress back through the divisions. Since moving into the role of Assistant Club Secretary, he has continued to offer invaluable support, advice and experience.

Former Oxford United Director and lifelong friend, Nick Harris, said: “It all started with Mick the supporter organising the London Road away travel. He then learnt his trade under the stewardship of the legendary Jim Hunt.

“When the times got tough Mick was always there, the man behind the scenes keeping the ship afloat. In those distressing times with a half-built stadium and administration on the horizon, Mick never faltered despite not being paid. He was always the person you could turn to and Mick never lost his faith in Oxford United. He led that band of unpaid staff through our Club’s darkest times. Yellow blood flows through his veins.

“Every football club, however big or small, needs a Mick Brown. Oxford United were the lucky ones.”

Oxford United Chief Executive Officer, Tim Williams, said: “Mick’s contribution to Oxford United simply cannot be overstated. For more than four decades, he has been the embodiment of dedication, professionalism, and loyalty to this Football Club. Through the highs and the lows, Mick has always been there, working tirelessly behind the scenes with the Club’s best interests at heart.

“His knowledge, experience, and unwavering commitment have made a lasting impact on everyone who has had the pleasure of working alongside him. On behalf of the Board, staff, players, and supporters, I would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Mick for everything he has given to Oxford United.

“He will always be part of the Oxford United family, and we look forward to welcoming him back to the stadium in the years to come as a supporter.”

Everyone at Oxford United extends their heartfelt thanks to Mick for his outstanding service and wishes him all the very best for the future.
