Oxford United can confirm that Club Captain Elliott Moore has left by mutual agreement.
Elliott leaves after six years, having firmly established himself as a modern-day Club icon. He played a pivotal role in United’s return to the Sky Bet Championship, captaining the side to victory in the 2024 League One Play-Off Final at Wembley Stadium.
The 28-year-old defender arrived at Oxford from Leicester City in 2019 and was appointed captain in December 2020. During his time at the Club, Elliott made 242 appearances and scored a number of memorable goals, including the decisive winner in the Play-Off Semi-Final against Peterborough United.
A natural leader on and off the pitch, Elliott led the Club into our first Championship campaign in over two decades and leaves as one of the most respected and influential figures in the Club’s recent history.
Before departing, Elliott took the time to leave a message for supporters. He said: “This is an extremely difficult decision after six fantastic years at the Club.
“I arrived as a young defender looking to settle and find a home. Little did I know that signing for Oxford United would be the start of something special, creating incredible memories along the way.
“I’m proud of everything we have achieved together from the heartache of Wembley to the joy of going back and getting the job done last May. To be the one who walked up those steps at Wembley and lift the trophy was a moment I’ll cherish forever.
“I want to thank all the players, managers, coaches, and backroom staff who have been part of my journey. Everyone has played a role in my time here and in the growth of this Club.
“And to the fans. Thank you for taking me in and making me feel part of the Oxford United family from day one. It’s been a privilege to wear the badge and the captain’s armband. I’ve strived every day to represent the Club and the supporters in the best possible way.
“This Club has become my home, and I leave knowing it is in a fantastic place to continue to grow. I wish everyone at Oxford United the very best for this season and beyond and I look forward to seeing you all again soon.”
Head of Football Operations, Ed Waldron, said: “Elliott will go down as one of the most influential players in Oxford United’s recent history.
“His contribution over the past six years cannot be overstated. On the pitch, he has been a commanding and consistent presence at the heart of our defence. Off the pitch, he has set the standard for others at the Training Centre.
“Many will remember him for captaining the side to victory at Wembley, bringing Championship football back to Oxford after 25 years, but his legacy runs much deeper than that.
“Elliott has been central to the progress this Club has made both competitively and culturally. We are in a far stronger position now than when he arrived in 2019, and he deserves enormous credit for that.
“He leaves with the respect of everyone at Oxford United. We are extremely grateful for everything he has given to the badge, and he will always be welcome back at the Club.”
Everyone at Oxford United would like to wish Elliott all of the best for the future and would like to thank him for his six years of service.
