Wrexham AFC… 1

(Broadhead 15’)

Oxford United… 0

Oxford United fell to a 1-0 defeat away to Wrexham, despite playing the last 20 minutes with an extra man.

Nathan Broadhead’s goal in the 15th minute was the difference between the two sides, with United piling the pressure on in the second period but unable to draw level.

After a 1-0 win over Derby County on Saturday, Gary Rowett fielded the same team for the trip to north Wales.

The U’s almost got off to a horrendous start, with Cameron Brannagan’s back pass having to be saved by Jamie Cumming. It meant an indirect freekick in the area, which United managed to deal with.

On 15 minutes, Broadhead got the crucial goal. A ball in from wide found Kieffer Moore, and his shot fell to the Welsh international midfielder. His shot was kept out by Cumming, but the referee adjudged that the ball had crossed the line.

United tried to hit back, with Stan Mills, the scorer on Saturday, cutting in from the right and forcing a great save from Arthur Okonkwo on 23 minutes.

No further action at either end before the break, with Gary Rowett changing personnel and shape. It brought a much-needed spark and the U’s were a much better side in the second period.

Will Vaulks had a good effort on the hour mark, which just sailed over the bar, as the Yellows started to threaten further.

Then on 68 minutes, Callum Doyle was shown a straight red card for a wild challenge on Siriki Dembele. From the freekick Brian De Keersmaecker found Will Lankshear six yards out, and his header cannoned off the bar.

United continued to push, and Cameron Brannagan could have had a penalty in the 89th minute, but the referee failed to blow.

Jamie Cumming had to make a wonder save in stoppage time from Sam Smith, but United couldn’t get back up the other to force the equaliser.

A disappointing evening, now on to Sheffield Wednesday away on Saturday.
