Oxford United are delighted to announce Aaron Lacey has signed his first professional contract with the Club.
The young defender has made significant progress with the Youth Academy, cumulating in his selection for the First Team’s pre-season tour to Indonesia this summer.
The 18-year-old has been at the Club since Under-16 level and spent parts of last season on loan at Stratford Town FC.
A strong and powerful central defender who is comfortable in possession, Aaron says he is now looking forward to making the next step towards more regular first team football.
He said: “I’m really excited. It’s been a great two years and I’m buzzing to sign a new deal.
“Being out in Asia, to see the fans, to be with the squad properly was amazing for me. I got some good playing time, and I learned so much from the players and coaches.
“It’s a really exciting time for me to train with the First Team and be exposed to their level. I need to keep learning as much as I can.
“I joined the Club at Under-16 level and signed my scholar shortly after. I played a lot at Under-18s when I was 16 which helped me develop quickly. Last year, we were unfortunate to miss out on winning the league, so it has been a brilliant couple of years to develop.
“I have a great opportunity here to have the balance of playing for the Under-21s under the staff here, while also having the chance to go out on loan in a professional first team environment. I want to get as much experience as I can now and make the most of this opportunity.”
Stevie Kinniburgh, Head of Football Development, said: "We are all delighted to see Aaron sign his first professional contract with the Club.
"Since arriving a few years ago, Aaron has gone from strength to strength. We are pleased with the way he has developed both as a footballer and a person, which is equally as important at this stage of a young player's career.
"Aaron's experience with the First Team in Indonesia will be invaluable for his continued progress and he now has a fantastic opportunity to take the next step in his career. We wish Aaron all the best with his future at Oxford United and look forward to seeing how he moves forward."
