LAST WORD: Short on Orient

Interim boss praises fans as United win at Brisbane Road

13 November 2023

Craig Short picked up a second win in a week as his interim reign at Oxford United continued with an excellent 3-2 win at Leyton Orient on Saturday.

Craig was typically honest after the game when he said “I didn’t really enjoy the second half- I think most of the Oxford fans were the same!

"We started the game well and were comfortable and then we had a little period when we got a bit frustrated with ourselves but we still came in at half time two goals up

“It is so difficult to play against a team that is so direct. Against some teams it is predictable but when the ball comes in so much you are thinking that if Elliott wins the ball, where is it bouncing, who's winning the second ball? But what pleased me was that when their second goal went in we seemed to calm down. Stephan Negru came on and added height and physicality, Tyler Goodrham came on and looked after the ball and we were better at 3-2.

“The players have all been brilliant this week. The recruitment here has been really good not just in terms of talent and ability but also the type of people we bring in, and the entire squad has been great this week. Go back to Tuesday night and the lads came in and did very well against a talented Chesea side who are one of the top Academies in the world and then we continued that today.

“A lot of the staff have been here for many years and are local people who care about the club. The players do too.

“They have responded really well after a poor season last year, we have had a good start and now Christmas is round the corner- from then until May goes so quickly so we need to keep doing what we have done so far and let’s stay in the race right now.

“That’s one defeat in ten for us and today we won at a club who had only been beaten once in nine games themselves. Richie has done a good job at Orient and they made it so difficult for us today but we kept our discipline and when we needed them the fans were superb. That section of the ground got us over the line and it was nice to see the lads celebrating with them at the end.”
